Helping a friend with a Win98SE computer problem. At power up it goes through the normal processes and then a ":Fatal Exception at 0028: SSOA14F6VXD WDMAUD (07) 0000 4546 ... Current Application Will Be Terminated .... ". If we depress a key, the "Fatal" screen goes away and the computer seems to work OK - but won't shut down in the normal fashion. I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and learned that the VXD apparently is Virtual Device Driver and WDMAud refers to Audio Driver. Couldn't find any problems/fixes that seemd to match what we have. Any suggestions?

THIS article explains your situation. It suggests a "hotfix" that can be downloaded HERE.

    Hope this helps!

Plansdowne - Thanks for the response. Looks like what I needed. I have printed the Microsoft KB page and downloaded the HotFix to a CD and will take it with me Friday when I go to try the repair work. Will post back and let you know how it came out.

Plansdowne, - the computer apparently healed itself before I was able to get to try the hot fix you directed me to. Perhaps it heard I would be mucking around with its software and it decided to straighten up.

It appears to be spooling up, operating, and closing down properly now. I did download AdAware and Spybot and run them and the AVG is up to date. This appears to be a situation where "angels should fear to tread" so I ain't about to be rushing in. I do have the article and the hot fix at the ready should the problem appear again. Thanks so much.
