I can sometimes run into a mental block and just can not think? Somehow I have lost most of my active program icons that show up in the lower right of my screen beside the clock read out.I know that Microsoft anti-spyware is running but somehow I do not have it's icon show up anymore when I start up my computer? Other program icons that I know are running are missing also. The only icons left are the AVG, Internet Explorer and the Zone Alarm icons. Question, how did I manage to loose them and How do I replace them? Believe me I really feel stupid if it is just a setting that I forgot to check! What is it called anyway it's not a quick link or a taskbar or a toolbar or a desktop Maybe it's called an icon tray maybe not. I am running an EX Home. Any help would be appreciated. loonychoons, Lenny

That area where the Clock and AntiSpyware icon shows I believe is known as the SYSTRAY

The Taskbar is the left side beside the START button.

    I just discovered ( remembered ) something.

Right click on the TaskBar, Select Properties and check the settings. I see there is one that will hide inactive Icons. I have it not checked.

Whether this is the problem ( or part of it ) or not I can not say.

I also see those settings refer to the " Notification Area " If that means what I call Systray I do not know. When I get more time I will test it and see what happens.

In the Taskbar you can drag-n-drop stuff in and out of it by right clicking. But the Systray you can't.

That is a new one on me. I have never seen Internet Explorer in the systray.

In the TaskBar yes. That shows " Windows BBS-Reply'..." right now. But changes when I do.

    Got it fixed thanks Guys.

You all to got me to thinking "smell the smoke" My taskbar had two vertical lines just to the right of the START BUTTON.I had never noticed them before? When I clicked on the right one I was able to move it across to the right almost to the clock! I was then able to click on and drag the appropriate desktop icons down and install them in the SYSTRAY. So all is back to normal. Thanks again Lenny!!! BillyBob when I said Internet Explorer icon I meant the little pair of attached computers that flash off & on that lets you know that you are on line.

How did you accomplish that ? I just tried to drag an Icon to the Systray and I got a circle with a line in it ( Stop Sign ) that says " No Way Jose "

I have been learning here too.

I right clicked on the Taskbar and up comes a menu with mention of Toolbar in it.

    So in messing around I find that at that bottom of my screen I have;

    .........QuickLaunch ToolBar ...
    Start ---------------------------------------- Systray/Notification Area in
    .........TaskBar ...

The QuickLaunch ToolBar is the one I can Drag-n-Drop into.

The task bar shows me what program(s) is ( are ) running. Right now it is Windows BBS. I started PowerDesk and it shows also. And I can switch back and forth using them. I can not drag-n-Drop into it.

CONFUSING as all Hello ain't it.

    BillyBob?Sorry?

I think(no I Know) that you are right! It just looked like I was installing the dragged icon into the SYSTRAY, But it is actually just beside it,( My eyesight is not the greatest and is not getting any better), But I was not even able to do that before? So I am no further ahead!! I know that when I download and Install a program that should run while the computer is on .The installation Wizard installs an icon in that SYSTRAY automatically? Maybe I should uninstall and then reinstall the Programs again? What do you think? By the way you have Pro while mine is Home could that make a difference? Lenny

    BillyBob, I failed again?

Well, I tried what I said that I would, I downloaded MRU Blaster " it is one of the Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster, and MUR Blaster Group "that I use from the Javacool Guys. Just as I thought it would, it installed an icon in the SYSTRAY. It was late then so I closed down ,thinking that I might preform reinstalls for the other missing program icons in the morning? Well to my surprise the next A.M. the MUR icon was gone, but I got back two of the missing icons from before Volume control & Microsoft Anti-spyware icons are back.WHAT GIVES??? I also can not seem to have any effect on changing the settings for what is, shown or not shown ,active or not, on the startup menu notification customizing. Example MRU Blaster is shown as a past item, I have requested it to always be shown, but it won't APPLY? How can I change it from a past item to a present item that might be the answer? Then I can ask for it to be shown only when active, maybe? Why do they seem to be changing on a whim or am I accidentally changing the SYSTRAY myself somehow? Lenny

At the moment I have no idea as to what is ( or is not ) happening. I have not ( as yet ) run into that problem.

It is going to take someone with A LOT more knowledge that I have to help you.

loonychoons: I am glad you like my Web Site. I had a lot of fun building it.

As to the Canadian Flag. That was put there out of respect for a friend in the Montreal area that my Wife and I have played Golf with on Tuesday evenings for at least 8 years. Plus he was OF GREAT help in checking things out as to whether they worked OK or not. He would check every few days and let me know via E-Mail what might need fixing.

WOW !! Does that ever bring back memories. of a LOT of WORK But at the same time we enjoyed the fruits of our labor the rest of the year on Pancakes Sunday Morning.

My Dad made it right up till the year he passed away. ( 1992 was his last year to do it )

Have a look here: Customize the Notification Area

What used to be called the System Tray in older Windows versions, is called the Notification area in Windows XP.

    Hey Arie

    Thanks for the reminder.

Actually when I really think about it, Notification area does make more sense because that is what it really does. If setup properly.

It notifies us of what should be is running or not.

It can notify us if something is wrong.

It notifies us if our AV is out of date. At least my AVG does.

I think MS AntiSpyware does also. But I can not say for sure. But it does at least notify us that it is loaded ( if we have set to anyway )

I was working on a machine for our Daughter-in Law yesterday helping her get a Router set up. :) Got it done too :) on both and XP and a 2K machine.

I happened to glance at the notification area and there were SEVERAL BLINKING icons. The MOST important one was her Anti-Virus. ( Norton I think ) I asked her when the last time she updated and got the answer " Over a week ago." Well that was taken care of IMMEDIATELY once we got the machine on line.

When we got to the 2nd machine it was almost as bad.

I talked to her later in the evening and she said that she had them all fixed. Most of them were just updates WINDOWS For one. So we both ended the day as Happy Campers.

So. As I wrote in another post. " I can see controling them. But I can not see having NONE. "

    Lenny ...

To add to what coolwaters, BillyBob, and Arie have told you, the Taskbar includes the Start button, the Quick Launch bar (which can be turned off if you prefer not to use it), a button for each running program, and the "Notification Area" (System Tray/Systray), including the clock. The icons in the Systray represent programs, loaded at startup, which are running in the background.

I notice that you have SP2 installed; a number of users, myself included, have had a problem after SP2 installation with the startup programs loading, but their icons not appearing in the Systray after bootup. Logging off and back on loads the icons, but that's an unnecessary nuisance. If that's part of your problem, this is the solution that worked for me:
    1. Open the Control Panel and click on the Add or Remove Programs icon.

    2. Click on the Add/Remove Windows Components icon (in the vertical bar on the left side).

    3. In the Windows Components Wizard which opens, scroll down to Networking Services, select it, and click on the Details button.

    4. Uncheck Universal Plug and Play.

    5. OK your way back out and reboot. You should have all of your Systray icons.
A nifty little program that helps you control the programs you run at startup is Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel. Installation adds a Startup icon to your Control Panel.

    Let me try AGAIN

:(I was messing around with the TaskBar and knocked myself off of the Internet. :(

Whether we see ( interpit ) thing differently I am not sure. But I do think we need to clear up some possible confusion here.

The Systray/Notification = no problem. We seem to agree.

But I just did a bit more checking and I believe that Start, the Tool/Quicklaunch Bar and the TaskBar are three separate items. I right click on each and get quite different Menus.

The Tool/QuickLaunch only shows what I personaly Drag-N-Drop there. I think that is why they call it QuickLaunch. One click and you are on your way to where ever.

The TaskBar shows what program(s) is ( are ) running. Like right now mine shows that I am on Windows BBS-Reply. I just stated PowerDesk and it shows too.

And this is where I S****ED up. I right clicked on Windows BBS and stupidly/carelessly hit CLOSE. Nothing like making yourself do things twice. :(

    BillyBob

    PS.

My TaskBar now shows that I am Windows BBS-EDIT.

And speaking of the Notification Area. I just got a Bad Weather Alert for my WeatherBug.

    BB
