Some time ago, I came across a utility wherein I could designate the default device or program such as browser, printer, etc. when not referred to by file extension, or other method.

Somewhere along the line, my default browser became IE, and I want to change it to Mozilla Firefox - but I have not been able to find the utility that provides that capability. Did SP2 remove it? - and change my browser to IE?

As a sole user, I am also the "administrator ", but feel like a complete novice many times when Microsoft "does their thing" leaving me "back to 'Go' ", (without the $200).

In any case, how do I designate Firefox as my default browser?

Open Firefox, click on Tools - Options - General -put a check mark in Firefox should check if it is default browser when it starts. Restart Firefox -check Firefox default browser.
