IDE Activity LED not reset by reset

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have tried setting this computer up multiple times. Sooner or later the following happens. I restart after installing a program, everything seems fine, It posts, It starts to load windows, then the progress bar freezes. The IDE light stays on constant. This seems to stay frozen like this indefinitely. (I think the longest i left it was 30min.) So then I reset it. Then what happens is that the IDE activity light stays on during the whole reset process and then the drive doesn't detect during the post. If I reset it again... same. I just turned it off for awhile (5 min.) and it booted fine. May be heat-related, but what. Case has decent airflow. 2 Fans Intake past hard drive.

    Lian-Li PC-60 or PC-66
    Antec NeoPower 480
    Gigabyte K8NXP-SLI
    Athlon64 3500+
4x 512MB Kingston or Corsair Value (Can't remember which)
    Maxtor Diamondmax10 SATA2 16MB Cache Firmware = BANC1B70
    BFG GeForce 6600GT 128MB PCI-e
    2x LG 4163B 16X DL DVD+/-RW

I have never seen this before. It is a brand-new system. This last time I thought that I had it figured out. I had unhooked the card reader because I thought that it was causing the problem somehow. Also, I have set up 2 other systems with same Motherboard, CPU, RAM Ammount. I has 4 of the same hard drive.

    I've run MemtestX86.

I also replaced the Hard Drive, after accidentally shorting it out while trying to flash the firmware (DARN Floppy Power Connectors !!) on another system. Before that I had tested it with Maxtor Powermax 4.16 ... Basic, Advanced, Surface Scan, and Burn-in

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciatted. If there are no other ideas, my next plan is to swap out the power supply for a Dual-Fan, and then replace the motherboard

When problems like that occur the first thing that comes to mind is drivers and BIOS updates that may address some hardware problems.
Also how did you short the harddrive and which firmware did you try to flash?

I had a similar issue w/ win98 on a 1999 comp. If I set the drive to master it would do that but when set to CS and then running the bios auto-detect-drive feature all was well.
