I'm sure I've seen a solution to this somewhere, but can't find it anywhere!

The Windows Explorer window now always opens at some pre-defined(?) default size. Every time I open it I have to reset the frame to set the display as I would wish. I don't want full screen - just the window scaled to my own settings. :)

Is there any way to do this, or to retain my own settings?

I have a feeling that I have seen some simple  registry fix but I'm lost at the moment.

Control Panel>Folder Options>View Tab. Scroll down to put a check in "Remember each folder's view settings ". Open Windows explorer and size it for your pleasure and x out. The folder should open at that size in the future.

Already did that, and it used to work fine.

Now it seems to have no effect. The frame size usually remains during any given session but the next time I power up the default settings seem to be invoked.

This seems peculiar to the Windows Explorer window and does affect any other program, such as IE and so on.

Get TweakUI and use it to increase the number of settings that are remembered.

You'll find that listed under the Explorer tab. Click the + symbol and then click Customizations. Default value is 400, raise it to 800.

If you're in to doing it manually:

Here's how to do it manually.

There's a new section: Common Problems.

XP and scroll down to Windows XP: Windows Doesn't Remember Folder Settings

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated. :)

In addition it reminded me to update my TweakUI from v2.00.1.0 to the latest v2.10.0.0

I like the new forum too, good idea to collect common problems in one place. I wonder how large that will get? :D

As stated in the Posting Rules, please use a 'meaningful thread title'.

    I've adjusted yours.

    Point taken.

Please accept my apologies for the over simplistic header.

No problem alanrf. We mainly want to have thread titles such that someone searching for help will find threads dealing with similar problems.

OK - I did the tweak program and it worked for about 2 hours. then my pages started loading small again.
I've reset the # on the tweak program again today and my page STILL loads small.
what is going on? why am i too stupid to figure something little like this out?

    exasperated -
    robin

why is my word "program" linked to something? I didn't do it!

Perhaps you need to set the number to something even higher than 800. Just type it in or use the scroll arrows in TweakUI.

I've tried numbers up to 10,000 and it accepts it so I suspect the limit is much greater than will ever be needed. FYI, I run well at 800.

Rebooting may also be a factor so check that.

    Hi,

As I write in Windows Doesn't Remember Folder Settings

1: I suggest at least a value of 1,000 or more

2: This is fixed in Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, which sets the value for BagMRU Size to 5000.

thanks for the replies. I'll try a larger number. (I'm really glad my ? didn't get lost at the end of this post!! - ya'll are great!)

I'm sure I have SP2...not sure why my original setting was still so low. But SP2 caused so many problems, I'm afraid to tinker with things now! :)
