Trying to help a friend with computer problems. They have an Emachine running Windows98. This computer reports several missing files. There is a restore disc with it but when I try to run it, it says the restore is not compatable with the current bios? I went to the cab files and found the windows setup.exe and ran that. (The last thing put on this machine was an upgrade disc for Windows98....it took it to 4.1...so I think that is what I am installing over itself ) ....The setup runs all the way through but we receive error messages when the computer does the final boot.

they come right on top of each other and are as follows

    1. can not find file 'dllreg.exe' or one of it's components. Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.
You can click ok and it continues
    2. Cannot load and run dllreg.exe specified in the win.ini file. Make sure it exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the win.ini file
you can click ok and it continues
    3. A required .dll file, MSASN1.DLL was not found

Windows finishes loading. We can use some of the desktop shorcuts and others we can't. We can delete NO shortcuts from the desktop. We get an error message and that the program will be closed. outlook express is only partially usable. can't open Internet Explorer at all....it will say illegal operation and program must close and then it will say a required dll file, MSASN1.DLL was not found

I found the email totally clogged, I cleaned it out and deleted the dbx files, I deleted all the temporary files. I ran scan disc. I ran a couple of virus programs that I have on floppy for specific viruses and it found nothing. We can get on line fine, but can't access the browser to get on the web and run a virus scan. They had installed an online virus application and still had an old Norton that came on the system. (THAT was probably causing some conflict) I couldn't get the Norton to fully uninstall. But I did manage to clean the other one off. This machine is in a "mess ". I suspect addware but can't get on a browser to get to programs to try to clean it further. it's running better than it 'was' but is still missing these files.

I don't have this operating system on disc.....I do have windows98 SE full install.....could I install that OS? Can I get those missing files somewhere and replace them? Can someone tell me how if so??
all help and suggestions are appreciated. I am only intermediate with the computer know-how.
    thanks

I wanted to mention that I can put my 98SE disc in the drive and it will boot from it, telling me it is a newer version of windows that what is on the computer and asking if I want to install it? Can you do the install that way?? thanks

I am also using an eMachine (eMonster500a). I got tired of all the emachine junk that was installed with the restore disc. I bought a Win98SE disc and installed it with no problems whatsoever. I am using XP now, and would not want to have to go back to 98. Hope this answers your question. :)

The missing file 'dllreg.exe' could be a missing virus file. Pick a link on it here.
The only legitimate Win98 file with a name close to it is DXdllreg.exe. A DirectX file.
    MSASN1.DLL is a MS file.
I would format and do a clean install, the system sounds like it is totally bugged.
This brings up driver issues, specifically the motherboard drivers. Does your friend have the CD? It appears the motherboard was changed since the Recovery CD doesn't recognize it.
If you want to attempt a repair, go get Reg Lite. Boot the computer, then using Reglite, do a search for dllreg.exe, and delete all entries that appear.
Boot with the CD, and install windows.
