I have a mate who has a problem caused by a restore point. In late January, his son-in-law upgraded his system from win 98 to XP. All went well. Last night he had a problem with his system, so he decided to set a restore point for one week ago ( The 19 th of this month ). Bingo, the fault was gone. Then for some reason , not even known to him, he decided to set another restore point, the 1 st of January, which was 30 days before he upgraded to XP. When he set and accepted this restore point, the computer screen just went blank.

He shut down the system, and rebooted, and the screen is still blank. It goes through the boot process ok, but when the desktop should appear, all he gets is a blank screen. In safe mode, he gets the same with an arrow in each corner of the screen. How can we get into the system to set the restore point for after the 30 th of January. Help please.

The only way we can shut Johns computer down, apart from turning off the mains, is hit the reset button. On re boot, it gives us the option of normal start or safe start. Either way, we still get a blank screen instead of the desk top screen.

Windows XP will not have any restore points PRIOR to it being installed on a system.

Only thing I can think of right now: How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP

    Arnie,
Many thanks. I am just going by what John said he had done. I will pass the information on to him, so that he can get his son in law to do the re install. Again, many thanks & have a good day.
