When buying blank DVD discs, what does the number represent? Is 8X for longer rercording time? I'm curious.

Most DVD disk are 4.7 GB. They do make a double layer disk that is twice as big. Your drive though has to be able to write to a double layer disk. As far a the number with the X that is the highest speed the disk can be burned at.

    Bubba,
The 2x,4x,8x refers to the speed that you can record on them. The higher the number the faster the recording speed. BUT if your recorder is only capable of 4x recording, don't by 8x disks because they are usually more expensive.
    Hope this helps

Thanks to both of you for your responses, they helped clear it up. Just to go a bit farther though, I like mostly to record on the most efficient mode (slp for example). I wouldn't need a 8x disc would I, probably a 4x would be OK?
