Back story: experimenting with Kerio and Sygate freeware FW's, with resultant problems (conflicts with Norton Utilities, for one)...Uninstalled Kerio, Installed Sygate...same problems. Uninstalled Sygate, reinstalled ZoneAlarm, which I had previously used. (The reason I tried the other two is because, for some reason, I occasionally have a problem with ZoneAlarm showing two instances of Mozilla active, which prevents pages from loading in Mozilla...whole other problem)

Now the problem: When I pulled Mozilla up after reinstalling ZA, recv'd illegal operations messages. Restarted computer, reinstalled Mozilla, then restarted computer. Opened Mail, which immediately brought up the set-up accounts window. Re-set mail account. This resulted in a new mail folder, which was empty. The old inbox is still showing up in explorer, so I copied the old to the new with the resultant "Do you want to replace..." msg. Chose yes. Now the newly created inbox says the old mail is present when viewed with Windows explorer, but it does not show up in the inbox window. Any ideas on retrieving my old mail?

    lostncyberspace,

When you copied Mail from the original Profile to the new Profile, did you copy only the Inbox file WITHOUT the MSF extension?

    Exit Mozilla
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the newly created Mail Account Folder
    Delete Inbox.msf
Start Netscape and see if that helps.

This sounds like a much deeper problem than Mail, or any Firewall. I have had Zone Alarm for about five years, except for a short time when I tried Sygate. None of them gave me problems.
The normal routine is to, either have only Mozilla or Netscape6/7 installed, or to have a different profile for each. Mail and other stuff in the profile can be handled later. It sounds, to me, like there was a mess before the Inbox was copied/pasted. It sounds like a number of steps are not being mentioned or glossed over. This is not meant in a negative way, because it took me a while to get foolproof results.

Mozilla is the only app involved here, not sure where you're getting Netscape 6/7 out of the post....and deleting the inbox.msf didn't work for me. It's probably something simple, I just haven't figured it out, yet. Thanks for input...

I did not say that I gathered anything like you having Netscape6/7, but it can be a problem (" either have only Mozilla or Netscape6/7 installed).
And, this does not mean that don't have any now, but it could mean that at one time you had this combination.
The installation of the program may help, but the profile which is not removed by uninstallation may have something weird about it.
All manipulations with the hard drive stuff must be done with the program closed, or, you are back to square one.

Ah, I see your point. I moved to Mozilla from Communicator 4something: work computer had v6 or 7 on it, and I didn't really see anything about it to make me want to move up, and I read your post literally. I'll have to check for remnants of 4x in registry. Thanks for your input.

Communicator should be ok, since it does not, and cannot share the same profile which can be shared by Netscape6/7 and the Mozillas.
At this point, I would forget about this. I would uninstall Mozilla, and, then reinstall it, and see if anything improved. If there is no improvement, create a new profile . You will need to give the profile a different name.
You should enter you account anew, and it will have only recent e-mail. Then, you can consider renaming the old Inbox to anything you want, other than inbox copy and paste it in the new e-mail account. You should have a new folder with your old mail. In 99.9% of the cases it should work.

Well, the inbox problem appears to have been due to corruption of the inbox file itself...renaming and copying the file produced the same results as a "copy here" over the existing inbox. I had a backup of the original profile from November, so I made a copy, renamed Inbox from that profile and inserted into the new profile, and that worked, so I'm out only the mail recv'd between then and now. Thanks to Ramona and Westside for all the help, it is much appreciated.

Too bad! But it can happen. I ran into a similar problem, but this was with my Spam account, so my loss was probably caused by one of the message, and it was ,mostly a welcome loss.
Just for simplicity, I back up the entire Mail folder, and repeat this once each week.

Yeah, that's good advice for anyone. I'll be backing up the important things more often, that's for sure.
