OK. lets go over some things.

That error usually does require a re-install.

    You have no Win95 CD

You are ( were ) are getting " out of Memory errors " Bad program

Your HD is only 4.3 gig. May be just plain over loaded.

You would like it fixed by tonught ?.

IF YOU HAD th 95 CD so you could attempt and overtop repair install and hopefuly fix the OS and save your data you MIGHT make it.

Otherwise I think you are asking the impossible. Especially without the 95 CD

I have some Win95 DISCS, but not CDS. Would it be better to just reformat the entire computer and put Win 98 on it (I have the CD for that)? Is that my only option-to lose all saved files on my computer and then install Win98?

It sounds like you have the old Win95 floppies, these would install 95 if you have all of them. It would be slow but the job will be done.
98 would be the better way to go, and doing a clean install is the best way to do it. I do not know which 98 CD you have, as one version is a bootable CD, meaning if you have the boot order set so the CDROM is first in line to boot, the CD will make the computer work by itself.

Go to Bootdisk, and download the file for 98 OEM. Put a floppy into the drive and double click this file. It will then create a 98 boot floppy. Do not just copy this file to the floppy and expect it to work.
Boot your computer with it, choose with CDRom support when prompted on the screen, it should be the default choice. Just before the A:\> appears, there will be a message giving you the drive letter for the CD, it will not be the usual letter, it may be E:. Use this letter in place of the X below.
When the A:\ is there, insert the 98 CD into the drive. Do these commands to start the install of windows.
    format c:
    x:\win98\setup

Type a Y that you want to format when prompted. During the format process you will be asked to name the drive, just press Enter if you do not want this.

Please note the size of the drive when the format is done, it will be onscreen. The reason for this is because of the 95 install and the file system (FAT16) it uses on the drive versus the file system used by 98 (FAT32) are different. Whichever one will make no difference on how 98 runs, but 95a will not run on FAT32.
But it will affect the size of your C: drive. A FAT16 file system only allows a drive size of 2.2 gb, allowing the rest of your 4.3gb going to waste as far as your C: drive goes. This extra space could be used up by another drive or partition on it, but I do not think you have this.
I bring this up, as now would be the time to fix this, if formatting does not show the full size. Let me know how it goes, anyway.

I have never used them, but you should boot the computer with Disk 1. If it does not autostart the install, use this command to see the files on it.
    dir a:\
You should get a listing of files. If you see a file with setup as the name, type that in as the next command.

I almost cannot believe this. It appears these floppies are the Updgrade version of Windows 95, meant for users of Windows 3.x or earlier. The message you got is when it looked for a previous version of windows installed onto the drive. I didn't think they existed.
About this 98 CD, does it say Upgrade on it? If it does, this will sound ironic, but you will need those floppies for proof of a previous version to do a clean install. During the install process, you will be prompted for them. When inserting the floppies, be sure to put the boot floppy back in when done.

OK I reformatted!! Windows 98 has been installed! Now all I need to do is get it to detect my graphics card and driver settings so that I can set the resoulution above 640 pixels, 16-bit colors, and connect to the internet. Is there a feature that automatically detects these? I have backups on floppies, but it would be much easier if it can dect them automatically.

There is a program called Everest Home Edition that will identify all your hardware for you.
Or, if you do have the video drivers on a disk, let windows install them for you. Right click on My Computer and select Properties, then in the new window, click on Device Manager.
You will see Display Adaptor is listed there, click on the + sign to the left of it, and Remove whatever appears there. It may say VGA on it. When it is gone, Restart the computer, and have the video driver disk handy as you will be prompted for it when windows restarts and detects the video card.

The Everest program will not fit on a floppy, so i burned it to a disk. But it says it cannot read the E: drive! How do I get it to read the E: drive?

Also, I got everest to detect my network settings, but it dosent pick up my graphics card...

Need Comp to detect graphics card

    As mentioned here

I got the program to detect my network settings, so now the internet works. But, my computer only can go on the lowest resolution and only 16 colors. I know I have a graphics card that lets it go farther than that, as it went much higher before I reformatted.

How do I get Windows 98 to Detect my graphics drivers?

You'll need to install the drivers. Use Everest to find the make and model of the video card then search for them online. Once you find the drivers, download and install them.

If you need help with any of that, post back with where you're getting stuck.

Everest is a utility that inventories your computer and tells you what you've got. So here are the steps to identify your video card so you can get it working:

    1. Start Everest.
    2. In the left-hand pane in Everest, click on the plus sign to the left of "Display. "
    3. Then click on PCI/AGP Video
    4. Over in the right-hand pane, the make and model of your video card should be displayed
    5. Post that information back here and we will help you find and install the drivers for your video card.

I get the idea you do not have your video drivers and you do not know what video card you have, or just do not have them installed,
Does Everest or 95's Device Manager say something like "Standard PCI Adaptor" if so that is your video card as installed by windows 95.
Do the following, and your video card will identify itself to you.

Open a command prompt window, and do this command.
    debug
The prompt will change to a - at this point, then enter this in, those are zero's.
    d c000:0040
You will now see a bunch of pairs of letters and numbers. To the far right will be a column with text, your video card is spelled out for you in a confusing sort of way.
    Enter in Q to exit.

BTW, I merged the two threads.
