i've tried to to that but i don't have repair listed. i was recently told by computer maintainance (friend at work) that i am missing one or more of my drives, that i may have to buy windows xp, and reinstall the entire system (i don't have the orginal disk that was suppose to come with the computer).

thanks for trying to help me. :)

You may not have to buy the OS and do a reinstall.

Check your hard drive for a folder named I386. If it exists, it should contain the XP install files.

In that case, click on the start button, on run, key in
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
and click OK. That should replace any missing or damaged system files.

If sfc requires you to put in the XP CD, post back since there is a registry setting that may need to be changed to force the system to look for the needed files in the I386 folder rather than on a CD.
