Can anyone help me get back the yellow shield that appears on my taskbar advising me of the updates I need to download? I set Windows Update to advise me but not to install. I am more comfortable with this setting, but it has disappeared and as of today, I have not received the update information.

You will only see the yellow shield in the notification area when there are critical updates to install. MS issues these on the second Tuesday of the month (time of day depends on where you are relative to Redmond - late afternoon here in UK). The shield will remain until you take action although it does not necessarily appear immediately on boot up. You need to be online for the info to come through.

Go direct to Windows Update and see if you are offered any critical updates. If there are critical updates then you may have a problem.

When I went to MS Security Bulletin for April, I found 2 critical updates that applied to me. The yellow shield came up every day because I choose to not install all of the offered updates. Because of this, the yellow shield was always there, until I got annoyed and with the March updates, I checked the box not to show or remind again. I thought this had solved the problem of it reminding me of what I did not want to install. However, come April 12, I did not get a reminder either. Is there anyway to get it to work again?

Sorry for the delay in responding - family troubles.

Have you been down this route .....

Control Panel > Security Centre > Manage Security settings for - Automatic Updates > Check 'Notify me but ....' ?

You may also like to 'Offer updates again that I've previously hidden'.

Yes, the Notify me but do not download or install is checked, but the shield is gone.

At the moment the best advice I can give you is to wait until May 10th - the date on which the next Windows Critical Updates, if any, are issued and see if the problem is resolved. With a fully patched computer it is very difficult for me to simulate your problem.
