Recently purchase a dell insprion 1000..came with xp home and various dell software packages including RecordNow CD burner program. ReordNow hasnt worked since i got this laptop. It will copy a cd but when attempting to burn the copy to another cd I recieve the message: recordnow has encountered a problem and will close..etc etc .i have had 6 online sessions with dell...have got nothing but the run around from them...each session they asked for me to uninstall /reinstall record now , download an install a "fix ",reinstate my machine to original factory configeration, etc etc etc. nothing has worked and finally on phone dell tells me i have a software issue and they will charge me to repair even thought it is still under original 90 day warranty! :( recordnow has not worked even 1 time......surely someone out there has had this problem before and dell is aware of this issue ???can anyone help me thru this issue?...

Suspect this is a hardware issue. Would remove recordnow and try writing a CD with the built-in CD writing software in XP. If the problem occurs there also, would return the computer for replacement.

Thanks for your responce...that is also one thing Dell suggested, did that and sucesfully burned a disc on the first try..pretty much elimanates the hardware issue i think...forgot to mention my burner is a QSI CDRW/DVD SBW242C....i also updated the firmware, and px engine...looks like i can either pay dell to fix something that wasnt working when they sold it to me,use the built in burner in XP,or purchace another softwqre program...probably opt for the last...something doesnt set right with me to pay Dell more money for this...

    Hi randyd
Have you checked Sonic's web sites FAQ?
    Sonic FAQ

It could be a speed issue, you might try slowing down the burning speed.

From the help menu of recordnow
"Select drive speed: Depending on your system, one or two drop-down lists allow you to manually set the recording speed for your CD and DVD recordings. The available speed settings will be based on the information reported by your recorder drives.
Use this option if your recorder speed is faster than the drive you are using to read your source disc. If you experience errors during recording, try reducing the maximum recorder speed.

By default RecordNow! will attempt to burn your recordings at the maximum speed available for your combination of drive and media.

Make sure the discs you buy are compatible with your drive. Double-check the disc format and the disc speed.
If you experience a recording failure, you may be able to resolve the problem by manually selecting a slower recording speed.

    randyd -

What part of your warranty are you having trouble understanding? You might want to consider complaining with a little more conviction. The squeeky wheel still gets the grease.

Hi Rockster u 2...i have complained fairly loudly but to no avail....one gets passed around from tech to tech with dell until you get kinda dizzy trying to figure out just exactly where you are....the comp itself was built in china and the tech's are in india...i have nothing at all against these people but there are some communication barriers involved...i feel like actually they are playing this along till the warranty is gone...tell me straight out....i am wrong to expect that everyting that came with the machine should be in working condition and that their attempt to charge me to repair it even tho its a software issue is outlandish?....randyd

Don't keep wasting your time - if not satisfied, Ask for a Supervisor.
