Missing text and labels on some dialogs ?!?

    For a few months now I've been seeing this anomaly. Some applications exibit it, others don't. There are different incarnations. On some newer apps text labels and button labels are not showing. All the buttons are blank! In other cases the mouse pointer icon when over a draggable divider turns into a black square instead of the ↔ or ↕ cursor. I know some of these apps use .Net, like Giganews Binary Newsreader v4 but some like HjSplit I'm pretty sure does not. On HjSplit the mouse cursor is a black square when over the buttons instead of a hand pointer.

    Machine is WinXP SP1, about 1 year old install. Had lots of sw installed/removed over the months. Lots of demos came and went so I'm not too surprised. I would like to know though what's causing this...

    I'd try to check if all system fonts are still in place, if that doesn't help either (i.e. fonts appear to be ok), do either a repair install, or start from scratch ...

    Well, if it's not indeed McAfee VSCan 8.0i ! Specifically the "Mcshield.exe" service. Stop it and everything works. Including viruses of course, so that's no good. Anybody knows of a fix or update? It's runnig the latest engine so I don't know what else to update.
