    I'm helping another friend try to cleanup their PC. It's a Dell running WinXP Home w/SP2. What I've done so far;

    In SafeMode;
    Deleted files in c:\windows\temp and prefetch folders
    Deleted files in c:\documents and Setting\users_xx\local settings\temp

    Deleted their two year old Mcaffee and installed AVG.
    Installed updated and ran Spybot, Adaware.
    Installed Spyware Blaster and updated.
    So far I've removed 49 virus infections, 120 items with Spybot and 143 with Adaware.

    I'm posting the HJT log to see if I've missed anything. This is a 2.5 Ghz machine that was running like a 500 Mhz or worse. Performance has improved greatly so far.

    Hi Dave,

    Thanks for the reply. I've cleaned up the things you recommended. I could not find the fax.exe or sas.exe files, and the rasbak.exe file would not upload to the site you posted. I went ahead and deleted the entries via HJT. I did run an online virus scan and it came up clean. Here is a new HJT log, hopefully it is clean now. Let me know if you see anything else.

    Thanks again,

    Bill

    Did you check the properties of rasbak.exe? Will you send me a copy, with WindowsBBS in the subject line? It's possible that fax.exe and sas.exe had already been removed and only the run entries remained. You did have hidden files set to show?

    Hi Dave,

    I removed the last entry you recommended with HJT. I looked at the properties for the rasbak.exe file, it just lists it as an application, I didn't see anything abnormal about it. I tried to copy it on to CD to get a copy to you but it says the file is in use. For the life of me I can't figure out what is using it. I even tried in a DOS prompt but it still says access is denied. I booted to SafeMode and tried to copy the file to another location to access it, but it won't copy that way either. Here is the error msg I get trying to upload it to jotti.org;

    The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file

    If you have any ideas how I can get access to it let me know. Here is a new HJT log in case you need to see it. Thanks again for the help.

    Download Pocket Killbox from here: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

    Close all other windows. Extract the file to a folder, then open and double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\rasbak.exe

    Check the box to delete on reboot and click the red X to the right. Click Yes, then Yes to the reboot now prompt.

    Upon restarting, download "Registry Search Tool" (RegSrch.vbs) from here
    http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
    start it and paste in rasbak.exe, wait for it to complete the search, click ok at the prompt. Then when wordpad opens, copy that back here please.

    You may need to install WMI to run the script. You can find it at that same link under What is VBScript?.

    Hi Dave,

    I ran the Killbox app as you suggested, clicked ok on the prompts, but it did not reboot the system. I waited a few minutes but nothing happened, so I clicked exit on the killbox window then manually rebooted. Upon restart I ran the regsearch script, the results are listed below. One thing I also noticed, rasbak.exe is still there and I still cannot do anything with it! This is one stubborn file. Hopefully the regsearch data will help.

    ; You must manually save this file to a new location if you want to refer to it again later.

    Can you right click and Send To>Compressed Folder, or have another zip utility to zip a copy, and attach to an email to me? Run the regsearch tool again in safe mode to see if the results are different.

    Try this with Killbox. Paste the filepath, check Replace on Reboot, then Use Dummy, click the red X and reboot.

    Dave,

    I just saw your reply this morning. I'll try your suggestions tonight and post back the results then.

    Dave,

    I tried zipping the file but kept getting access denied or don't have permissions to access this file. I did the replace thing with killbox and now the file shows as being 1kb instead of 840kb as before. When I ran the regsearch in safe mode it didn't find an entry with the filename in it.

    What do you think, is it ready for prime time again?

    Boot to safe mode, Admin acct and right click>properties on the file, then there should be a security tab. You can change permissions and/or take ownership of the file there. Once done, you should be able to delete it.

    Hi Dave,

    I was finally able to get the file removed via the info in your last post. I've run scans again with Spybot, Adaware and AVG and all are clean. Do you need me to post another HJT log or do you think I'm done with this thing?

    Thanks,

    Bill

    That's Great! :) The last log looked clean, so I'd say, clear the system restore points, reboot and create a new one then surf away. ;)

    Dave,

    That sounds good. Thanks again for all your help on this. Hopefully they will use the tools to keep it this way.
