Ordinarily I just have my disk cleanup utility program delete all temp files, maybe twice a month. However, I have one temp file, that if deleted, crashes my scanner (thank you HP for that brilliant software design!). Is there a way to protect that one temp file so I can do a one-step cleanup of my hard drive without losing that one file?

What happens if you set it as read-only? That should/may stop the deletion but if the scanner needs to make modifications, it might still fail.

Also might be interesting to set it as a system file. That way you should get a warning when the routine gets ready to delete it and can say no. I don't think there is a way from the GUI to do this but you can always use the run line or a cmd prompt and
    attrib +S c:\temp\myfile.tmp

Newt...that "read only" suggestion of yours appears to have worked. I think I owe you a beer...thanks.

LOL - thanks for the beer offer. Just glad the 'fix' was that simple.
