For some reason the software that came with my Epson 1250 perfection scanner has stopped working - I've posted here for help without success and the Epson helpdesk can't suggest a fix either.

Can anyone suggest a good alternative application for using with an Epson scanner? I've tried Vuescan but it's quite slow and cumbersome. I'd like something that is very quick and good for scanning multiple pages without having to start from the beginning of a wizard each time I start a new page.

Googling "scanner software" wasn't especially helpful as Vuescan was the only application of any use.

    I use Paperport.
Have you tried uninstalling the scanner software completely and then reinstalling it?

Hi Tony, yes I've done that several times.
Do you like PaperPort? I used to have that when it came bundled with an old Brother MFC - it was pretty average then.

Well, I have a Visioneer scanner (2nd one) and both came w/ paperport. However, I only use the scanner for images, so rather than launch paperport, I use my graphics app (paint shop pro) to import the scanner images. Most all graphics apps have a function to import > twain, which means that you can scan directly from the graphics app using twain devices such as cameras and scanners.

The image editing features in paperport and similar are not as good as decent graphics apps, so why use it? Faster to just launch the graphics app and scan directly from there. When doing it this way, the scanner app (paperport) launches and does the scan, then the image is sent directly to the graphics app. But only the paperport scanning app is run, not the entire paperport program. The scanning engines works as a plugin with graphics apps.

The paperport I have now is version 7, which has decent scanning options, simple defaults as well as customizing scanning options. It works well, even w/ slides.

Thanks for replying, Tony. The other issue with the scanner ceasing to use its native software is that I can't scan from within any programme. PhotoShop, Corel, etc won't "acquire" anymore so I've been left with only ScanVue to get images.

Thanks Tony, I've had a look at that site, but can't see anything initially helpful, but will spend a bit of time tinkering over the next few days.

    Yes, I have that version.

    Cheers,
    Jo

Have you tried disabling the scanner in device mgr, physically disconnecting the scanner, reboot, reconnect scanner, reboot, cross your fingers and saying an ancient phrase? Can't hurt. At the least, uninstall the software, dump the scanner from device manager, reboot and let XP find it again and then reinstall the software.
