I had some problems with corrupt and missing files and ran system file checker. Because I had SP2 installed it could not complete with my original XP disk and kept asking for the SP2 disk (which I did not have). So in order to repair/replace the corrupt/missing files I uninstall SP2 and ran sfc. Once that finished I tried to reinstall SP2 several times and my computer would shut down and I would have to uninstall and reinstall again (shut down was caused by an incompatible display driver).
OK, so I got all the files fixed and the driver updated. Went to update site and it is checking for updates then I get a page says sorry blah blah blah and click this link for help, then click another link that relates to your problem which gives me a page cannot be displayed. So basically I cannot download SP2.
Another problem after uninstalling SP2, NIS does not start. When I open it to set options it says I do not have permission only administrator has permission...... I AM administrator and the only user on this computer. When I click user accounts in NIS it says not logged on but the log on button is greyed out although I am logged on Windows as admin.
I know that NIS can cause this problem but it is not running and I can't get it to run.
Please help, at this time I do not have a firewall or virus protection. I have gone into services and restarted all of the Symantec items, but they are not listed in my startup in msconfig. They are listed and show running in the Services tab. I have stopped and restarted them several times but they still do not show up in my startup tab.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

It sounds like sp2 has to be reinstalled to get things working. Back up all your important files and reinstall windows. It sounds like it may be beyond hope so the best way is to reinstall everything IMHO. When done innstall sp2 but not symantec.

    Joyce,

I tend to agree with Chuck, but it may worth your while doing this first ....

Make sure that Windows Firewall is active - very important. If I remember correctly Control Panel > Network Connections > right click on your dialup connection > last tab on the list. SP2 changed a lot of this.

    Download and run AVGFree antivirus
As Symantec is not starting there should be no conflicts.

Then go here and download the full version of SP2 - ignore the bit about IT Professionals and Developers - this is the full pack - Windows Update only downloads what your system needs. Save to hard drive and install from there.

    BTW - This is a ~270Mb download - broadband required :D

After installation you may need to reinstall NIS (uninstall AVG)

For future use slipstream the SP2 package with your XP CD to create a Bootable CD as described here. You can happily run SFC from that - and install XP with SP2 if needed.

Unless I am thinking wrong this morning, ANYTIME you mess with things the way you had to, NIS ( or any AV and/or Firewall ) should be disabled ( shutdown ) and make sure that they DO NOT reload on a reboot untill things are fixed up. If activated they will/may stop files from being over written properly.

Lesson also learned the HARD WAY by me. But I was not using NIS and I did have the SP2 CD to recover from my mistake.

If SP2 has been installed ALL repairs MUST be done from it and not the original XP CD.

I think that I have to go along with Chuck_W on this one except for one thing that I did not see him mention. Do ALL you can to get rid of Symantec before the re-install attempt. And make sure it is not in the startup group. If it were working properly it would be one thing. But it is not.

I finally resolved the issue. I knew that NIS had to be the root of all evils on this one. I used System Mechanic and added the NIS files to the startup in msconfig. Once that was done I had no problem downloading and installing SP2.
But once downloaded it completely wiped out my network connections and everything was slower than a turtle. Took forever for any program to open and about 2 min to open IE. And surprise Nortons did not work.
I talked with MS agent and he had me change one little key that is a known issue with MS but advised they don't know why it happens after uninstall and reinstall of SP2.
To correct the problem his instructions were:
    regedit
    HKEY_Local Machine
    Current Control Set
    Services
    RpcSs
    Object Name
double click and change the value data to LocalSystem (it did say NT Authority)
This one little change that took 5 seconds fixed everything.
Everything ran fine while I was on the phone with them of course and for a while afterwards. Then I started getting an error message that mshtml.dll had caused an error and IE (and yahoo and msn) had to close.
I defraged and as yet (been online about 5 min) I have not had this error message pop up.

So just in case I do start getting this error again, how do I fix that? Keeping fingers crossed that all runs smoothly.
    Thanks all for your responses.

Pete, I am downloading the full version from the link you gave in your post to save to disk.
Should I use this and reinstall SP2 over the one I have now? Heavens knows I don't want to uninstall the darn thing again, but will it hurt anything to reinstall over the extisiting one that I d/l from the windows update site?

No, I would not reinstall SP2 over SP2 which is basically working - in fact I'm not so sure that it would anyway. Windows Update gives you only what your system requires - the download you are making is the full monte - so to speak!

Use the downloaded copy to ceate a slipstreamed XP boot CD for future use - including running System File Checker.
