I'm looking for a good backup tool. I'm running W2KPro on 2 machines on a home network. I currently copy most recently changed folders to the 'other' machine from the primary on a dialy basis, and the D and E drives in their entirety lass often.

Can you recommend a program that can automate the process.

    Thnaks in advance for recommendations.

Windows 2kPro has a built-in backup program. It is virtually the same program as Veritas, just stripped down. It can be automated and backups can be written to different media. Unfortunately, I don't think you can restore at the file level.

Veritas makes some good software. We use it in a commercial environment.

    Have you considered Nero?

    I did a quick google for "personal + backup + software "
    Top list was http://www.stompsoft.com/backupmypc2.html ~ $59.00

    There's also tons for freeware/shareware.

Also, If your moving data between systems, you could always write a script and then have the script run at some scheduled time. W2k has a scheduler program in control panel.

Another Idea is a 200+ gb portable USB Harddrive.

I believe the built in backup program can retrieve whole directories or only files. Unless the version in 2000 Server is different than 2000 Pro.

    I stand corrected :)

I recently used backup on a 2003 server and was able to restore individual files.

It's been a while (4 yrs) since I used the native program on a daily basis, so I can't remember why we went to Vertias, except to say there are more whistles and bells...which may not be neccessary in this case.
