Right click on the favorite you want to change, choose properties>change icon and browse to the icon you want to use. If you want the one that comes from the website, just type the address of the website followed by favicon.ico into IE's address bar and click the go button or press enter. So, for example, to get the icon for this site you'd type the following line.

    www.windowsbbs.com/favicon.ico

When you see the icon in IE, right click on it and choose "save picture as" and save it to your hard drive. Then you can go through the routine mentioned previously and select it for the icon for the favorite you're trying to change.

If you do this the icons will show up in your favorites also.

IE should show them in the address bar and also in your favorites without having to do this but for some reason MS has never seemed to get this correct and it's been my experience that it doesn't work very well. The advantage of keeping them on your hard drive is once you've selected an icon for a favorite it won't change. If you get the icon from the site just by visiting the site (that's the way it should work) the favorite for that site will show the icon but the problem with this is the icons are stored in the temporary internet files and are deleted whenever you delete the TIF's. When this happens the icons for the favorites will change back to the default.

    See Saving Favicons.

Once you get the favicon (customized web icon) saved, it will appear with its associated URL in the Favorites list as well as the address bar (when that site is accessed).

Note: Firefox browser keeps and uses favicons automatically, saving you all the work. ;)
