BrowseUI.dll can't be found, how to fix...

    When I start up I don't get any icons or anything, all I get is my wallpaper and pretty much all I have to use is the CMD prompt. I CHKDSK and it says it found files but won't fix them because I didn't use /fix or something. I can't figure out how to run it.

    I'm using a friends computer to try and fix mine...

    Can anyone help me?

    EDIT: Better yet, can anyone tell me how to use System Restore in the CMD prompt?

    Rob17--I think you can access System Restore from Safe Mode, but in answer to your question here are instructions from a Google reference to do it from a CMD prompt.
    "How to Start the System Restore Tool from the Command Prompt

    System Restore is a great feature in XP, but if you aren't able to boot into the Windows GUI normally or in Safe Mode, how can you use it? Here are the instructions for starting System Restore from the command prompt:

    Start your computer by selecting Safe Mode with Command Prompt from the startup menu.
    When the command prompt is displayed, type the following: [systemroot]\system32\restore\rstrui.exe (the system root folder is the folder to which you installed the XP operating system files, usually c:\windows).
    Press Enter.
    Now you can follow the instructions on the screen to use System Restore to restore your computer to a previous functional state. "

    Thanks, I just found that before you posted and I went home and tried it.

    It still can't find the file.

    I'm still lost.

    It more or less gives me this to work with...

    chkdsk.exe

    Check Disk - check and repair disk problems


    syntax
    CHKDSK [drive:][[path]filename] [/F] [/V] [/R] [/L[:size]]

    key
    [drive:] Specify the drive to check.

    filename Specify the file(s) to check for fragmentation (FAT only).

    /F Automatically Fix file system errors on the disk.

    /R Scan for and attempt Recovery of bad sectors.

    /V Display the full path and name of every file on the disk.

    /L:size NTFS only: change the log file size to the specified number of kilobytes. If size is not specified, displays the current log size and the drive type
    (FAT or NTFS).

    /C Skip directory corruption checks.

    /I Skip corruption checks that compare directory entries to the
    file record segment (FRS) in the volume's master file table (MFT)




    I can't figure out how to chkdsk and fix.

    First run chkdsk .....

    At the cmd prompt type in chkdsk /r > enter. Accept the offer to schedule on next boot if offered and reboot.

    If this fails to fix the problem run System File Checker ....

    At the cmd prompt type in sfc /scannow note the space and have your XP CD handy. SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any were replaced look in Event Viewer - if you are up and running of course.
