Read on a Beta Testers site that a NS 7.0 Preview Release may be available soon. Wonder if this is false , considering latest Mozilla build is still in RC stage.

    Hi Dr. JB,

Unfortunately, it's true. :( The Netscape Champions are testing 7.0b1 now, and there is a page for 7.0 on the ftp site. There is also a Theme Page and who knows what else, the public is not aware of as yet.

IMHO, I think Netscape is releasing 7.0 prematurely as with their other 6.x releases. Although Mozilla 1.0 RC2 is awesome, compared to earlier Mozilla Releases, it still needs work! Especially the Mail and News, which is still substandard. 7.0 is supposedly based on Mozilla 1.0, so I rest my case.

Ramona, it begs the question : who is pushing the NS release...Netscape themselves or AOL? I recall something about AOL switching from IE to NS, speculation perhaps.

Surely NS cannot hope to catch up, as they surely must have lost a lot of ground to IE. Interesting to note on the Mozilla history list that 1.0 RC2 is fully CSS2 compliant....perhaps they'll come up with a killer with the final release. Too late?

Maybe you wanna switch your alliance to IE:D

    Dr. JB,

My guess would be that AOL is pushing the Release.

I hope that Netscape won't be too late to be a serious contender in the Browser competition. Mozilla 1.0 is a good browser, which is not to say that Netscape 6.2.3 isn't. However, with all the added fluff, it definitely takes its toll.

Switch to IE?  :p Not in this lifetime. ;)

    Ramona

    EDIT:
I wanted to include this link for you:
    AOL 7.0 tests Netscape browser
This is probably why AOL is making the push, in order to get Netscape 7 ready.

    Please no.

Give us a nice and trouble-free Netscape 6.xx first.

Oh yes, Antony. In fact I just read a thread on the Netscape 6 Newsgroup, where Jay is suggesting that a user wait for Netscape 7.0, rather than install 6.2.3:

I have been using Netscape for years....I like the way it works so seamlessly with newsgroups and my email.........I am using Communicator....if I download Netscape 6.2 will it work along side Communicator or will it mess up all my current settings etc.
    --

Wait for NS 7.0 as there have been MANY improvements in mail/news ...

    Suffering from dementia?

Are you trying to confuse me in my ol' age, Ramona :(

You reckon mail/news still needs improvement, and agree with Anthony. In same breath, you seems to recommend Jay's recommedations  Excuse me, just going to clean my glasses..................

One can't help but think Netscape (AOL) is pushing to release 7.0 just simply have a higher number than IE. I still think it's funny that Netscape jumped from 4.7x to 6.0 with no 5.0 in between! I don't buy that rumor that they scrapped 5.x as it was only a research/beta build. I think they knew IE was putting updates out faster than they could keep up.

    Dr.JB,

Sorry to confuse you in answering Antony's "No "! I believe he was referring to the fact that he just finished his streamlined versions of 6.2.3, and now there will be yet another Release (7.0) that he will CCK.

In other words, oh no not another Release, and I answered, yes Antony, another Release! Got it?

    I haven't gone bonkers quite yet... ;)

Told ya, I'm getting senile  Old age and all that!

Hulka raised an interesting point. I wondered when I posted the original post if there ever was a version 5. Considering the timespan between 4.xx and 6.0, I'm really surprised that there was no 5, unless it was only in the laboratories ;) Most software developers use incremental numbers for their updates....except MS. Win 95...98...2000...XP, so I guess no NS 5 is not really an exception.

    Hi Dr. JB,

Well you're not alone in your "Senior Moments ". ;)

I have seen an explanation of why Version 5 was not released, and I will see if I can find it for you. Bottom line on IE, Netscape, Opera, etc., .... marketing!

    Check It Out!

    Hi Dr. JB,

Check out these links for the imminent, and I do mean imminent release of Netscape 7.0 PR1:

    http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/7/default.jsp

The download pages will be available soon, so watch for them here. According to the excitement on the Netscape 6 Newsgroup, speculation is that it will be released within the week.

I'll post as soon as I have further information, unless someone else beats me to it... ;)

    Ramona,
    For the "imminent "?

Don't you feel that there are too many new releases/updates to Netscape already?

Well, I've removed NS some time ago. So I may just try 7.0 out of curiosity, and if I'm not impressed then it's going the same way as 6.xx

Thanks Ramona, will keep my eye on this.

I'm with the doc, I haven't used Netscape since 6.x was released. If I ever did any installs of Netscape I always did 4.7x. I'll check out 7.0 PR1 but if it's anything like 6, I'll scrap it.

I would suggest wait until 7.0 (final) or 7.02 or 7.03.

Actually, we'd better wait one year after the 7.0 (final).
(According to the history lesson we learnt.)
