    I have had NAV on my machine for some time and I normally disable the auto-protect function so I do not have the program running in the background. I decided to enable it but I do not seem to be able to do so. I first tried right clicking the icon in the tray and clicking enable. It does remove the X on the icon but when I reboot the X returns and it is not enabled. I also opened the NAV program and checked auto-protect there and again when I reboot, it is disabled. A while back using a full NAV scan, a couple of viruses and a worm were discovered, I wonder when I tried to remove them if they caused damage to the NAV program? Anybody else had an experience like this one?

    Totally possible and in this day and age probable:
    http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl=en&lr=lang_en&q="Cannot+enable+"Norton+auto-protect"

    Suggest a trip to security forums and read the stickies pinned (up on top) in both forums. Follow directions, in order given, run online scanners etc...

    While you may think your clean, a reboot can and will rerun any resident virus, trojan or malware critter you have, hence you will become reinfected.

    As a side note:
    In some cases some of Norton's own files will become infected and in a cleanup process Norton will damage or cripple its self. That coupled with the fact that some virus' are known to have the ability to make you think auto-protect is enabled and functioning when, in reality, it is not. This is what makes on-line scans so important. You must be thoroughly sure you are clean and have cleaned using the proper manner/order/technique (ie; safemode, disable system restore, etc.) so the critter does not boomerang back.

    I can not get any of the online NAV scanners to work. The two available give a message that they can not perform the scan--no reason given.

    ackerberg,

    If you're using Firefox, or Mozilla, you won't be able to use the Trend Micro link on Pete's list. However, you can use the UK Trend Micro site to scan:

    Trend Micro's online virus scanner

    Browser support includes all major browsers that support the Java 2 Platform:

    * Microsoft Internet Explorer
    * Netscape (6+)
    * Mozilla (1+)
    * Firefox (all)
    * Opera (7.5+)

    Operating Systems currently supported are:

    * Microsoft Windows 9x
    * Microsoft Windows NT
    * Microsoft Windows 2k/XP
    * Linux
    * Solaris

    Thanks everyone. I did use Housecall and I discovered, by trial, that I had to use IE to run it. Thank you Ramona for pointing this out.
    There were no viruses or worms. I suspect that somehow NAV is corrupted and the only solution may be to reload it. I did not want to fool around with my computer until I printed out my tax returns and another small project, both of which are now finished. So perhaps I'll tackle this problem first by running sfc /scannnow to see if there is any damage here.
