    First create a new folder such as C:\HJT and put HijackThis.exe in it. Download it here.

    I see My Way Speedbar in your list of installed programs. If you did not install it (it's usually drive-by installed junkware), try uninstalling in Add/Remove programs, then delete the folder C:\Program Files\My Way while in safe mode. I also recommend you uninstall P2P Networking and delete it's folder in C:\Windows\System32, as well as Altnet, and it's folder in C:\Program Files.

    Download and install Ad-aware SE Personal from the link in my signature. Immediately update.

    Download the RemInstAccXP.zip file attached to this post. Save it to your desktop. Rename if necessary. Now right click the zip and extract the RemInstAccXP.bat file to your desktop. Note to others.....the attachment was written specifically for this machine. Please do not use if you have zipzap popups too. Start your own thread and someone will gladly assist you.

    Right click My Computer and choose properties. On system restore tab, check the box to turn off. OK out.

    Either reboot and repeatedly tap F8 to enable the start menu, then select safe mode, or go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and click OK. Click yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode. Logon to your user account.

    Double click the RemInstAccXP.bat file to run.

    Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

    Open Ad-aware and run a full scan. Delete all it finds.

    Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and click OK.


    If you used msconfig, uncheck the /safeboot box and click ok to reboot. Upon reboot you will be greeted with a message window from the System Configuration Utility. Check the box not to use and don't show, then click OK. If you used F8, just reboot back into Windows.

    Scan your PC with RAV. If any files are infected, click the report button then copy and paste it here.

    Run another HijackThis scan and post the log. Let us know if the popups have stopped.


    P.S. If you'd like to know what the batch file does before running it, just let me know. I'll be happy to explain.

    Thank you for all your help, but this is really beyond me. There is no way I can place checkmarks by a file and then delete it. The names and details are too complicated.

    I downloaded and ran the Ad-saware progrm and then read that I am the person who is supposed to know what to quarantine.

    I am now missing a file called EGDAccess_1028.dll and I have no idea whether I want or need it. It's my own fault for thinking I was an intermediate user just because I have had PCs for 25 years.

    And during this whole effort I have been beset with zipzap ladies flashing their talents at me every few minutes. I also get windows messages saying that there's a problem and asking if I want to send a report. Naturally everything goes to hell immediately. How did this happen?

    I'm quite confident you can follow out my instructions. :) Print them out for reference. It's a good thing that you're missing the EGDAccess file. ;) (it's one of the nasties associated with the popups) When the Ad-aware scan finishes, click next to see the results window. The results are on tabbed pages. Scan summary is the first. Make sure you're viewing that tab and right click within the results, then choose select all. Click next and then yes to delete them all.

    To print out the instructions without getting extra pages just right-click the #4 at the top of dave's post and select open in new window. Then print the instructions from that window (2 pages only).

    Thanks for the encouragement. :)

    I was not sure about the HiJackThis checkbox items because I could only find four of them. But I checked them and dumped them.

    I have done it all except the RAV report. It appears I need ActiveX Controls to run ravantivirus. I checked the MS site for download info and there is too much information (about developers, etc. ) Suggestions?

    Your security settings in IE are not allowing you to run Activex Controls - there is nothing you need to download.

    To run the RAV scan do this ....

    Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Security and click on the Trusted Sites tab and then on the Sites button.

    Uncheck 'Require server verification (https) for all sites in this zone'

    Copy this URL (right click on URL > copy shortcut) ....

    http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

    and paste into the 'Add this website ...' box > OK

    The default settings for this zone should allow ActiveX to run on the RAV site.

    There should have been a filename for that infected detection. There's a scrollbar in the results window so you can see it. We need that filename and location.

    Please click here to download HijackThis.exe. Click Save on the download box and then click the arrow next to the Save in: address bar in the save dialog box that opens. Select Desktop, then click Save. When the download is complete, right click your desktop and choose New>folder. Name it HJT. Now cut and paste HijackThis.exe to that folder. Open and scan. Place a check next to the following entries and click fix.

    I've attached a picture that shows (and tells; in red) how to copy the entire RAV results.

    Please try this again and post a new HijackThis log. (you still have it in a temporary directory, as if you are clicking Run rather than Save on the download) It needs to be in a permanent folder.

    missing RAV filename

    The RAV report contained a mention of a virus but did not provide a filename. My query to them was answered as follows:

    Not so fast there, Pat. We aren't done yet. :D ;) Try running Panda ActiveScan.

    If you did indeed turn off system restore, re-enable it. Also recommend you download Spybot Version 1.3 from my signature, install and update. Allow it to load SD Helper. Open it up and click mode on the toolbar, then advanced mode. Click immunize in the left pane, then immunize again, this time from above with the green + beside it (always recheck this setting after downloading updates). Click the link below that for SpywareBlaster, download, install, enable all protection and update. Check for updates regularly and watch for any protection being disabled. Then, still in Spybot, click tools button, then IE tweaks and at least lock the HOSTS file.
    Then download IESpyad.exe, double click to extract (it extracts to C:\IESpyad by default), open the folder, double click the ie-ads.reg file and allow it to merge into the registry.

    That will give you some added layers of protection against unwanted parasites.

    I also recommend you uninstall SpyHunter. Please read this. Recommend you install and update Ad-aware SE Personal. Use Spybot and Ad-aware for spyware scanning and removal. Always check for updates first!
