I have two Dell computers reasonably close in age both with XP. The newer and faster has the following problems: (I have 512 meg memory in both)
    On IE use I get:
    1. Bottom left of screen yellow ! "error on page" with java script problems like syntax error when the ! is clicked on. This occurs on the majority of web sites I visit although it does not seem to affect what I am seeing on screen.
    2. I can't get my Schwab statement to show as PDF file (when the program offers printer friendly version)even if I run Adobe Acrobat first (7.0)
    3. On some sites that allow, for example, Holland America ship room plans to be brought up, clicking on the link does nothing. The javascript on the bottom shows that a popup is supposed to be carried out.
    4. Slower loading of screens on this the faster machine.

Now, the major difference that I see is that the one with the problems has in the control panel the java coffee cup option and the other doesn't. Both have the Windows JAva 5.00.3810 on them.

I have run Ad aware Spy Blaster Spybot search and destroy and eliminated files that were targetted.

Here is my Hijack this log:

I know that there is a lot of stuff I don't need in this list.

Please help me with this frustration that the newer computer 18 months old works less well than the older one <grin>

    Thanks so much

Somehow this thread got passed by - moving it to the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum as an HJT log has been posted.

BTW - have you checked/compared the security settings of the IE's on the two computers?

    thanks for move

Yes I have checked the internet settings and they are the same. The older computer does not have Nortons IS running but I've disabled that on the first one without any changes at all.

Every site shows the error on page (with ! in yellow) with clicking leading to a box showing a javascript error.

Many web pages contain errors - they are written by humans :)

In IE go Tools > Internet Options > Advanced and scroll down under Browsing to 'Display a notification about every script error' and uncheck it - I guess it is checked.
Try adding the site to the Trusted Zone (uncheck the https box).
Ditto, but check security settings in the Internet Zone to at least Prompt for scripting of Java applets. You may have the pop up blocker activated in the latest version of IE. Pressing either the Shift or Control Key while clicking the link will allow the pop up.

Your best bet is to install Sun Java on both m/c's - happily co-exists with the MS VM although I have uninstalled the MS flavour - I assume that both m/c's are fully updated through Windows Updates?

I would recommend a read of this article Surf Safely written by Arie, Admin of the BBS.

I follow this method and have no unwanted 'guests ' on my PC's - only drawback is that sites often have to be added to the Trusted Zone (generally on a temp basis) to enable me to view the site properly, but that is a small price to pay for peace of mind securitywise.

    thank you

Much of what you suggested was occurring (pop up blocker enabled,e.g.)and seems to have resolved most of the problems. The popup request now goes through, although the page not available screen comes up. That however may be a function of the Holland America site.

I have had Sun Java on the computer before and don't now. Is it really worth making the change?

Thanks again for your great help!

That depends on how you look at it, eventually you will have to ....

Microsoft Java Virtual Machine will reach the end of it's life in 2007 and will no longer be supported under the agreement reached with Sun after the court case. You may like to read the FAQ's for interest.

For the moment I guess there's no need - I believe that there are some sites which will only operate with MSVM, but I don't know which.

My sister bought a new laptop a couple of weeks ago - XP Home SP2 and was supplied with Sun on it. I am fairly sure that part of the agreement with Sun was that MS would cease to include MSVM in current Operating Systems.

I changed to Sun some time ago after the first settlement with Sun which had a much shorter timesscale, subsequently extended as above.
