After a program installation hiccuped on my new WinXP SR2 laptop, I'm no longer able to move or copy shortcuts, which is a bear since I was in the middle of tidying up the Start Menu. When I try something I get "Unable to create an instance of required object: ServerAdmin" mssg and a fatal error notification as the window closes. Suggestions on how to fix short of reinstalling, which I don't think I can do without reformatting (I think ... XP's networking orientation is a confusing pain when you're just dealing with a standalone). Thanks in advance.

More detailed information will help in pinning this one down. Check your event logs (start => run => eventvwr.msc) for errors or warnings connected to the failures.

When you find one/some, open the event, click on the icon below the up/down arrows to send a text copy to your clipboard, and paste the event(s) here.

We only need to see one of each event but it you have a few different ones, please post each of them. If you aren't sure about an event, better to post it than not.

After giving Newt the information he has requested because a peek into your event history may offer a solution less intrusive then the suggestion below, I am curious what the program was that started this and can offer an alternative method to attack this problem...

It might help to know which program you had the install problem with and what you have done to resolve that issue. Since the problem started with the bad install of "thusfar unknown ", have you uninstalled it, then, using system restore, restore to the point prior to the install to see if the problem is gone? Then look for known problems that may occur between this application and XP sp2. You may need to update it or use some known workaround for xp particularly when the sp2 patch is involved. That's assuming the program or application is even xpsp2 compatible. Whether by choice or otherwise, some programs just haven't managed to fix all sp2 bugs.

Since the initial install didn't go well anyway and depending on the program, this may be the way to go. You may have less problems down the road.
