At one time, I was experiencing a problem with XP locking up after disconnecting from the internet (dial up). Numerous calls to tech support finally discovered a solution, Start, Run, msconfig, click on the startup tab, and uncheck various programs. Apparently one or more programs were searching for updates.
Since then, I have re-installed XP and forgot to make a note of what I can leave unchecked.
    Starting from the top:
    SynTPLpr
    SynTPEnh
    atiptaxx
    ccApp
    SNDMon
These are still checked, and I think there is one I can still unckeck. The Syn is related to Norton anti-virus????

I have unchecked msmsg (don't use that nonsense), Acrobat, Office.

    Any help is appreciated. Alan

    SynTPLpr - Synaptics Touch Pad
    SynTPEnh - Synaptics Touch Pad
atiptaxx - ATI utility related to notification area process icon
ccApp - Symantec Common Client - NAV
SNDMon - Process associated with - NAV

For more info on these Google for SynTPLpr, etc.

My guess is that atiptaxx could be unchecked.

Do you have enough ram in your computer? I had a machine once that did the same thing and by adding more ram it cleared the problem.

Thanks for the replies. From a Google search:

ATIPtaxx.exe is the traybar process for your ATI graphics card drivers. It gives you easy access to your graphic card settings. This process can be removed to free up system resources.

ccapp.exe is a process belonging to Norton AntiVirus 2003. It is responsible for the auto-protect and email checking facilities, both of which will not function correctly if this service is stopped. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

SNDMon.exe is a process associated with Norton Antivirus application from Symantec. This process should not be removed to ensure that your system security is not breached.

ATIPtaxx rings a bell with me, I will unckeck it. Thanks again for helping. Alan
