It turns out that there is some malware going around that's deleting the autoexec.nt
Well that would explain it.. But, I am not convinced this root cause is accurate. Newt said he saw it in a corperate environment, where your typical nastyware isnt going to get a foothold.

I do not understand the motivation for whacking this file. It can cause no good things to happen. The point of malware is generally to do its buisiness very quietly, i dont see how breaking the snot out of the vdm subsystem achives any useful purpose.

Y'all keep us posted if someone actually figures it out.

FWIW I found this fix .....

    XP_FIX.exe

I have no idea whether or not it works or is advisable to run.

    Corrupt sys32 files

    Thank you Pete.
Further to this matter - the corruption of this, or these, files affects the OS' ability to repair itself. Trying to run Smart Restore brings up the same error message so with preinstalled Windows, you really are between a rock and a hard place. I mentioned the matter of obtaining a backup CD of the OS to the operator of the manufacturers phone helpline yesterday and was told that if the system went to custard, I would just have to go out and purchase it retail. I thought this was a bit rough as I figured I had already purchased the OS and was entitled to have 1 backup hard copy. I will be checking other threads on how to burn a copy - I tried burning the Windows folder in toto, but I dont think it worked.
I mentioned the XP fix to my computing class tutor today and she has had the same problem, so it appears that this may be fairly widespread problem that a lot of people do not recognise as such, so I for one am very grateful that you raised the subject.
    Cheers,

    corrupt sys32 files

Don't mean to ramble on but in my searching this matter, I came across one reference which incriminated XP Service Pack 2 as a possible cause, as well as malware.
    For what it's worth.

Not in a month of Sundays :D

Do you have a Recovery CD?

If not there may well be a hidden folder/partition on your drive with a mirror of the original install.
