    When I go into control panel and set my password for Outlook (or Outlook Express - I have tried both) it will not remember the password even though "remember password" is clicked. I get prompted for my password evertime I go into my mail.
    What's the solution?

    While doing an "Archive Search" of help.net database of past posts reguarding this issue I came up with these two:

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4913&highlight=outlook+password

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4650&highlight=outlook+password

    There are others you may wish to peek at to see if they address issue if either one of the above prove unhelpful........

    search

    used keyword filters of outlook password
    Made sure IE was forum designated but additional ones may also be available by "All Forums" search.

    I'm running Windows 98 so those threads didn't help. I suspect it is a registry problem but there is no "Protected Storage System Provider" in Windows 98 (that I saw anyway) as there is in Windows 2000 or XP.

    Outlook Express

    Select the Tools menu.

    Select Accounts.

    Highlight your account, in most cases this is called pop3. and click the Properties button.

    Click onto the Servers tab.

    Put a tick into the Remember Password box.

    Click OK, then Close and restart Outlook Express.

    I wish that worked! I have done that about 50 times. Each time I go back to the Servers tab my password has disapeared even though the "Remember Password" box is ticked and is not grayed out. I have tried doing in a different order, etc. but nothing works.
    I really think it must be in the registry but I don't have a clue how to fix it.

    I guess I'm just going to have to give up. I went into the "Protected Storage System Provider" in my registry and there were entries everywhere with huge cascading menus with all sorts of entries.
    The only way I can figure is to delete everything under this registry key but I assume that will cause big problems with my computer.
    I did not see any subkey that had my username that I could simply delete.
    I am about resigned to just typing in my password everytime I check on my mail.
    By the way I can open Outlook without my password and I can send mail but I can't check for incoming mail without my password.
    One other interesting fact is that everytime i reset my computer, the name of my POP3 server changes to "localhost" and I have to go in and change it back to the proper server name. Also my account name changes to the correct name followed by a slash and the correct name of my pop3 server. Instead of "gianes" it will read "gianes/pop.gulftel.com" Pop.gulftel.com should be the incoming mail server.
    I have a feeling this is not something I am goint to be able to fix this way but if anyone has had a similar experience I am all ears.

    Its almost like you have a shortcut to local host .
    Start > Find > Files or Folders , type host & press Enter .
    Right click on to view .

    Here is some info on hosts .

    And here is a password program .

    http://www.iopus.com/wasp.htm
    123 Write All Stored Passwords (WASP)

    WASP will display all passwords of the currently logged on user that are stored in the Microsoft PWL file. It allows the supervision / convenient deletion of this file to improve the
    security / privacy of your PC. It is also very useful for educational purposes about computer security. In the documentation you also find helpful facts about the Microsoft PWL file in
    general.

    Prior to recieving this "localhost" change or your restart of computer and the opening of OE, are you on line before doing this?

    I believe Email will change to, use or remap to localhost when opened while disconnected or offine.

    Keeping in mind that jmatt may be closer to your problem/answer than myself, I just don't know enough to advise on any other software or application element that may be thrown in the mix here such as Firewall Software, Email Fetcher/gofers, Virus Scanners or even isp/network Server.

    Hmmmm..... speaking of Virus, have you scanned recently, both for viral and trojan critters. I'm thinking specifically of Trojan. Port watching, Password Stealing, Server Host remapping are classic signs. One may have even blocked your ability to cache or save password so that while typing in the thing it may be captured. Just a thought, but worth mentioning in case the possibility has slipped your mind.

    ===================
    Why don't we back this baby up and try something simple and basic enough to do. You can make [by adding] a New Mail account which is the same as your current, using same setup. The copy [for lack of a better description] will simply be named *same_as_you_now_have(1). The number addition is automatically appended or added to the end of duplicate account names.

    To do this
    *open OE
    *using menubar>tools>accounts>mail tab select the option button labeled ADD>Mail

    From the popups that follow afterwards setup using this nfo:
    http://support.gulftel.net/email/outlook_express.php

    Being careful to type exactly as seen. [I figured or assumed that your previous thread in which you use the capitalized P in Pop.gultel.com was a typo but little errors like this if actually made in an account setup will cause malfunction.

    NOTE* The dialogue popups you will get will be slightly different as I have given instruction for creating New Mail account from the "Mail Tab" as opposed to New Mail account from the "ALL Tab ". You may wish to follow your support sites instructions exactly as opposed to mine.

    Both of the accounts should fuction the same but hopefully the new one will have saved password and retained settings on a reboot. If it does you can Remove the old one and make the new one the default. If it doesn't you can Remove the New one you just created.

    ==================
    Opps, I was about to tell you that in any case a scanreg /restore to this morning or yesterdays dated registry backup will reset OE to what it was prior to this experiment but it occurs to me that your version of windows is unknown at this point?????

    I did the search for "host" files and I found plenty but again I can't tell which one may be the offender.
    Can I safely just delete all of them that are in the Windows file or will that cause problems?
    Thanks,
    Jim

    I have tried bebooting from every scenerio I can think of and I get the same result everytime. (I am using Windows 98).
    I have also already tried creating a new mail account. It acted the same as the old one.
    I have done a virus scan and I am clean.
    I haven't installed any new software since the problem suddenly occured.
    Also, the capital "p" on popmail was a typo. I have typed it correctly.

    I am hoping the "host" file will do the trick if I can figure out which one or (ones) to delete. What if I delete them all. Is that a problem?

    Thanks,
    Jim

    Do you use window washer?:
    http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q228713

    How about Trends Pc-cillin:
    http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q303645

    also see this:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2027&highlight=host

    ==============
    Do you have multiuser setup and do you login to windows?
    Asking this because if you are bypassing logging in windows may not cache or save this account nfo [depending on setup]. Perhaps logging in as another user would help. Same scenario is a possibility when using identities in OE.

    ==============
    May be to late since you first posted this problem dated from the 16th, but what is the latest dated registry backup? You can check this out by looking for your rb*.cab files. I'm thinking a scanreg /restore may help. Remote... but a possibility none the less.

    ==============
    Since your losing this nfo on a reboot it isn't be written to the registry for some reason. I'm think there is some kind of pstore install command that can be done at the dos prompt..... let me check for this nfo and see exactly what it's function is. I'll be back... with this....

    ==========
    Have you ran SFC.exe to see if any of the pstore files [.dll] are reported as corrupted? I'm not sure if this would produce a screaming error but an sfc scan looking for corrupted files can't hurt. Ignore other flags, SFC is a helper and not very wise when it comes to files flagged as missing, changed or replaced. An uninstall or update/patch may have done this and sfc just doesn't know it, but when it comes to file corruption, it's best to take sfc's word on it. The only thing you have to watch out for is the version you allow sfc to replace it with. This is critical!

    ============
    As for the host file, I'm not secure enough in my own knowledge of the function or best procedure for this. Deletion wasn't it though. It requires an edit in notepad and the deletion of the ip line that's wrong. The subject is in the Archives though. Try looking there.

    Did a quickie search and grabbed this:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=728&highlight=host

    ======
    Now off to find out about pstores......... be back....

    Okay.......
    F.Y.I.
    Protected Storage, or PSTORES.EXE, to store all sorts of secure information;

    S/MIME keys for digitally signed and encrypted email or web site authentication
    Profile Assistant information such as your address or email address given to web sites
    Passwords for programs such as Outlook Express, or Outlook '98 - SSL Certificates for Web Servers

    In the MS-DOS Prompt window, type the following command
    c:\windows\system\pstores.exe -install
    and then press ENTER

    Quit all programs, and then restart the computer

    This in theory will enter correct hkey in registry. No harm done if it is already there and correct, but may help if this is fouled up somehow. Point may be mute though if the root of this lies somewhere else in registry, such as mentioned in one of the previous links I had supplied earlier. I think if you have repaired IE it would have caught this anyway.... Oh well.
    NOTE* You may be wondering why I have not gone back to that link which envolved a registry sub-hkey deletion but as it is 2:00 in the morning for me and I have already written quite a bit for you mull over, I will have to get back to this later.

    ==============
    As you can see I don't like giving up on a problem and I tend to try anything I can think of or come up with [unharmful on others OS']. If at any point you find this a nusiance just give me a shout and I'll back off.

    I don't understand. What does changing to "localhost" do for me? This is not the correct setting for my ISP. I am trying to get my computer to stop changing to "localhost' everytime I reboot.

    Am I missing something here?

    Thanks,
    Jim

    Well . . . I have been out of town for a few days. Got in last night and deleted PC-Penicillin anti-virus software (long story) and installed Norton 2002 anti-virus. Norton did not find any viruses but after resetting my computer a couple of times during installation, my mail works perfectly now.
    Thanks to all who helped with this but I don't know anything more than I did when I started about what caused it but I do now suspect a virus did have something to do with it.
    Thanks again,
    Jim

    Not trying to have the last word but yes I scanned several times with PC Pinicillin and it always showed I was clean. Even Norton showed me clean on its initial scan after loanding the program.
    However, SOMETHING made a difference. I just wish I knew exactly what did it so that perhaps we could help someone else with a similar problem.
    Thanks again,
    Jim

    Are you clicking on the links and reading the nfo provided within or are you assuming they refer to scanning?

    These links explain that email scanning option/setup can interfer or change your configuration.

    Quoted snippets from the links:

    "When you use Outlook 2000 or Outlook Express to check mail, the settings may be changed to "Localhost" in the Post Office Protocol (POP) server settings and "account name/pop server name" in the Account Name box on the Server tab ". WORKAROUND
    To work around this issue, disable the POP3 Scan feature of the Trend PC-cillin software

    "accounts box it changes back to Localhost. Once i have changed the accounts back to the POP3 accounts and restarted, I can only operate outlook express once, before I have to do all this again! ", "What is the POP addressses changing to? If it's changing to either Local Host or an IP address ( depending on what AV software you are running,with Macaffe it will usually put in an IP address and Norton or PC-cillin puts in Local Host )
    Does it also put the correct POP3 address at the end of the Account Name as well e.g. joebloggs/pop.anyone.com, because this is also a common fault with AV software "
    .

    ========
    Sounded like your problem symptoms and your cure. Don't understand why you still think I was suggesting you had a virus and should scan when I was trying to point out that it was the scanning software protocal that was the problem.
