I have an XP machine without a floppy drive and I need to establish a connection to my older 98se machine for small file transfers. Neither have network cards.

I'd like to do this by using the modems and a fifty foot phone cable if possible. I could use a serial connection but the machines are in different rooms. The 98se machine would be the host. What methods should I try?

I suppose in theory this is feasible, but I would just buy the network cards and a crossover cable.

Greetings. I am frustrated by two problems regarding this question:

One: I have a budget for this issue of $0.0 and

Two: It seems feasible to me as well. But after substantial searching, I can't find out how to do it.

I'm comfortably "intermediate" with computers (cobbling together a system, understanding software, formatting hard drives, etc.) but I'm a dummy as far as modems are concerned. And because it seems possible, I want to figure out how to do it as a learning lesson.

I could get a cheap usb flash drive to transfer the files, but again the $0.0 budget...and I wouldn't learn anything by doing that.

I figure someone must know: can the dial-up modems speak directly? And can I do it with 98se/xp software? Or any software?

I'll see if I can find anything, but am not really optimistic.

    Hmm...

Not certain, I do not have a modem in my computer. Can be done through a serial connection though.

On the Windows XP machine, click on start ---> control panel ---> Network connections/network and internet connections (classic view) --- > Create a new connection ---> Set up and advanced connection ---> Accept incoming connections

You are on your own from there!

I appreciate the feedback on my question and adamt56 most recently. I would still like to determine if it is possible to get the two dial-up modems to directly communicate for reasons in my last post. I could carry one desktop over to the room with the other desktop, but where is the challenge in that. Plus I'd rather just unroll a phone cord. And I have $0.0 do spend. (And at this point, even if I magically received a free usb drive to transfer the files, I'd still want to figure this challenge out.)

I have most recently tried connecting the modems with a regular phone cord and using Hyperterminal to use ATD and ATA commands (one Dialing and one Answering) at both windows desktops. I can't get this method to work and receive NO CARRIER responses.

I read somewhere in my search for doing this that the direct connect method was "unreliable" unless using a phone cord modified to mimick the current found on a live phone line. It didn't seem like "unreliable" meant impossible.

Looks like at least three of us are reading this post and that's better than just me trying to figure this out. I'm optimistic. Thanks again.

I think your point about "No Carrier" is the stumbling block here. It may be possible to configure the modem to ignore that, but I don't know. It may also involve creating a "crossover" cable as used in PC-PC LAN setups. Again, not sure.

I couldn't find anything in the MS Knowledge Base.
