I am using Windows XP. Lately it has started freezing up on me. It will freeze up for about 10 or 20 seconds and then be ok but it does this over and over again. It does it sometimes when I'm browsing but mostly when I play a game or CD. I have tried everything I know to do and can't get it fixed. I changed my antivirus program from eAnthogoly to NOD32 and it scans clean. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

    Hello rcook,

    How much RAM installed?

Did this start after a hardware or application install?

What's running in the background? Bring up Task Manager > Processes tab.
Look at the CPU usage during the the "freeze" if you can.

Also look at this thread http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=39425

rcook - Welcome to the Board :)

This may be due to an overheating problem .....

Open the case and check that the cooling fan(s) is(are) spinning.

Download Everest and look under Computer > Sensor and post your mobo and CPU temperatures.

    Charles and Pete,

I have 512MB memory. The problem seemed to start after I installed my scanner but I have uninstalled it and it didn't help. I have noticed when using my computer that it is extemely loud. I downloaded Everest and my CPU temp is 68 degrees and my mobo temp is 43.

    68.. rcook thats meltdown? lol

I assume your talking c here right? 33 - 72 c max... (cool n quiet, speed step tech depending) mobo temp is a bit high also... check your not measuring the core and the surface of the cpu rather than the cpu and motherboard..

also since the problem appears to be happening in games... check the graphics card fan is always spinning... I had a tempermental gpu fan that only sometimes started when the computer was switched on

depending on your motherboard, any other fans might be spinning up to try and compensate for a faulty one (hence why your computer sounds noiser)

    my 0.02 cents anways :D

    hope that helps..
    Ian.

EDIT: 68c isn't so bad if its the peak temperature.. but if your getting that temperature when your sitting idle with no programs/games running... then you can only imagine what your getting when your doing something cpu intensive..

Your temps are way to high - have you checked that the fans are running as I posted earlier?

Take the sides off the case and run the computer like that for a while - check if the temps are reduced and post if the problems persist.
This may be indicative of a noisy fan bearing which is on the way out.

Would you confirm that the temps you posted are deg C.

I think we can safely assume that, never seen a mobo running at 6C :D

I put this here because I believe it may be related. And also is the first time that I have really checked this out.

I just checked with Everest and my MB stays pretty constant at 41C

The CPU fluctuates between 40c and 50c. Averages about 45 C

The CPU fan speed fluctuates between 3709 and 3835 RPM.

Do I read corretly that I may need to do a bit of cleaning. Or fan replacement. Or is this within the normal range ?

Nothing to get alarmed about - looks fairly normal to me, although the mobo seems a little on the warm side. My current readings 24 deg C for mobo and 49 deg C for CPU (AMD) - case has rear fan in addition to CPU and PSU fans. Uptime ~ 8 hours at ambient (room) temp of 20 deg C.

AMD processors run hotter that Intel - don't recall offhand which you are running.

    Thanks PeteC.

I do have and AMD CPU.

But I just looked MORE CLOSELY and I have a Fan on the backside of the case WHICH IS NOT running.

Power plug check and/or fan replacement will be done TODAY as I have to go town today anyway.

I am VERY GLAD that I took the time to check.

    Fan replaced

    Cleaning done.

    Temps are now
    32-35c for MB
    36-40c for CPU
Fan speed is now over 4000.

I guess a little cleaning helps.

    Hey BillyBob...

yeah a good clean always helps... (especially if the user smokes!)

glad to see your temps are back down to less painfull levels :D Your freezing issues are a thing of the past I hope?

my new case has air filters on all the fans... I really dont know what I'd have done without them now...

Its a shame most other manufacturers havent made it a defacto standard :(

was it cat/dog/human hair/oose/niccotine... that killed your last fan?

I've seen a lot of fans / cdroms die that way

    Deffinetly.

I was not having any freeze up problems. I just decide to check. But it could have been headed for some if I had not found that fan problem.

I think it is more of a combination of things.

#1 AGE. Fan has been around since the day of DOS. In a different case but still used.

    #2 niccotine...

lol sorry Billy, I was at work when you posted and didnt realise you werent the 'parent'.

air flow (between ribbon cables etc) can make a huge difference on temperatures... also, don't sit your puter straight on a carpet... lift it up on a bit of wood or something making sure any underneath airvents are clear.

If you REALLY get paranoid about your cooling... you could go for water or gas ... I prefer the idea of liquid nitrogen... but I'd be too lazy to go down to the chemist every few days to buy a canister (not to mention the funny looks I'd get lol)

Ok...I have checked my temps again today and they are: Motherboard-45 degrees C and CPU-69 degrees C. I'm fixing to slide the side off and see if it cools down any....We just replaced the fan about a year ago but maybe we need to do it again.

We just finished a game of Internet Golf.

    Temps are 37C and 42c

I checked during the game and the CPU never went over 45.
