    Hello,
I am getting an error when opening up IE6 (Winxp Pro SP2)
I get the message "sorry but...it needs to close..." and then when I check in event viewer the error is as follows:
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Application Error
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 1000
    Date: 04/04/2005
    Time: 6:50:41 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: HEXADECIMAL

    0058: 30 33 38 66 65 32 0d 0a 038fe2..
I then reopen IE and everything is fine????

This usually only happens once a day but today I actually had the pleasure of seeing the message twice (lucky me :( )

Anyway, I'll tell you what I've done to get to the bottom of the problem
Scanned for viruses with Mcafee(this is what I have installed) and then scanned for viruses with panda, pc-cillan, pcpitstop.
I used numerous spyware detectors, spybot, ad-aware, microsoft antispyware, cwshredder, etc - too many to name and removed anything they found which wasn't much (even got a false positve - see my post
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=43379
I then ran sfc and it found nothing out of sorts either.

Any ideas as why this error is happening.

I also just got an error when looking at the event viewer that the event log file is corrupt. I closed it up and reopened and everything seemed to be there.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    thanks in advance :)

    Copy the command below.

    regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

Click start>run and paste it in, then hit enter. You should get a 'succeeded' message. Reboot and open Internet Options in the control panel. On the Programs tab, click Reset Web Settings. **Note - This will reset your Home page and search engine to the Windows defaults. Let us know if the problem persists.

    Thanks again - Noahdfear

I did what you said and again we'll have to wait and see. So far I haven't seen any errors in my event viewer this morning. I usually have a regular one from Mcafee:
    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: McLogEvent
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 5028
    Date: 04/04/2005
    Time: 4:39:34 PM
    User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
    Computer: HEXADECIMAL
    Description:
VirusScan McShield service received an invalid filename from the NaiFiltr device driver.
    Received name = \GLOBAL??\TFSWIFS
    Process = EXPLORER.EXE

Strange enough, I didn't get it this morning even before I followed your instructions.
My next steps (if this didn't work) will be to start disabling my add-ons one by one to see if one of them is causing the problem.
There's one in particular: driveletteraccess (not verified) sonic solutions
tfswfhx.dll that might be related since this is also the program that Mcafee is having a problem with
I also waited a bit (about a minute) before opening up IE this morning. Thought it might be an issue with several things trying to be accessed at once.
I'm also not ruling out that Mcafee may be causing the problem. With my old windows 98 machine, I would update and then it would reboot without warning. This went on for several months before they fixed the problem.

I'll probably switch to PC-Cillan next year when Mcafee runs out. My mom uses it and has never had a problem.

Anyway, I'll let you know and thanks again for all your help!

I am at my wits end. I backed up all my important stuff this morning.
I have also posted on the xp forum a lot of the errors I've been encountering.
Yes, the error is still coming up. This morning it happened twice.

I've done spyware scans, defrags, sfc etc. Two days ago I ran chkdsk which did find a problem that it supposedly fixed
    see post: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=43340

I really don't know what else I can do. I spoke with dell last night and they suggested that I get an extended warranty. My computer is just over a month old and it is covered for a year so I'm not ready to fork out more money to them quite yet.

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hello jazcan,

Because your system is new, here's what I would do:

I would use System Restore to go back to the beggining or near it. Presumably this started sometime after that point.

Did you add any apps since you got the system? If so, do they have anything to do with the internet?

Have there been any BHO's or any other browser plug-ins that have been added? IE's Tool bar > Manage add-ons gives you a list. If you decide to go back, look at that add-on list before you do and compare to the original "fresh" state.

The only other option that I think is open is a repair, and the mildest you've already used - sfc. The more intrusive one is to repair the OS: http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_ie6.htm

My choice would be to go back via SR.

    Regards - Charles

    thanks for the reply charlesvar

I had to actually turn off system restore a couple of days ago while removing some spyware so as far as I know that wipes out any older restore points.

My next step is disabling my BHOs one by one. The first one I have disabled is the driverletteraccess dla sonic solutions tfswshx.dll. I know that Mcafee is having a problem with a certain file related to this program as well when it scans at startup which produces a warning message in my event log.

    Hi jazcan,

My next step is disabling my BHOs one by one.
Good move, glad you thought of that :)

    Heads UP...

Mcaffee has a known problem with dla:
    https://knowledgemap.nai.com/phpcli...=kb/kb_nai21684.xml&docType=DOC_KnowledgeBase

Being an HP owner and having past "sgtray.exe ", "Record Now" and "DLA" issues I have long since uninstalled these but I did remember the issues. I believe XP's own built-in cd burning service also has some issues with these buggers as well as any third party burning program you may have. I didn't need them so I got rid of them. They may have since updated or have put out patches that addresses issues but I have not felt the need to pursue the issues. You may wish to peek into this. This may not be the root cause of current problems but they certainly can't be helping any Mcafee issues you may be having.

    Thanks Goddez1
I've been looking at that program also. I really don't know if it's causing my current problems but it seemed a good place to start.

Thanks for the link - I think I stumbled across that yesterday.

I also uninstalled sonics update manager and unchecked a few other entries from my startup - cthelpter( I've read about problems with this also), mmtask (musicmatch- I don't use the program and will probably uninstall) qttask (quicktime), realsched (realplayer) and updreg (creative registration?).

I also downloaded 2 registry cleaners (no I didn't remove anything) to see what they would find. I was shocked that regseeker found over 700 entries and RegScrubXP found 156. So no doubt my registry probably does need some cleaning up too.
I'll be posting in the XP forum for some advice on that.

Thanks again for the input :)
