If this belongs somewhere else then feel free to move it.

I just ran into something yesterday that I can not print what I think of it.

While doing DirectX Diagnostics on my two Win98SE machines this message came up.

" The file nvdisp.drv is not digitally signed. Which means that is has not been tested by Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality labs. ( WHQL ) Current drivers tested for WHQL logo are only available on Windows ME, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. New 98 drivers are no longer tested for WHQL Logos. "

To me this is rediculous. WHY NOT ?

I have as yet not found anything ( that we use anyway ) that will not run just as well on 98SE as it does on XP pro.

I do have limitations on the 98SE machines. But they are HARDWARE ( beginning right with the MB and CPU. ) not OS related. I can not ( or should not anyway ) expect a 175 or 500 CPU with 128 meg of RAM to be as fast as and do the same as this 1.2CPU with 512 meg of ram.

On the other hand maybe I saw this message at the right time. I was thinking of building a new machine for my Wife and using 98SE. But it looks like it would be better if I tossed that idea and went with XP.

Or ( as I did with this machine ) copy her existing HD ( leaving hers intact for now ) and then upgrade the new to XP Pro. And for more than one reason. Microsoft, Software and Hardware venders are all abandoning 98.

BTW. I was just talking this over with my Wife. She said ( in good plain understandable English ) " You had best not mess up my machine. "

Writen by a guy in a bad mood this AM.

If the machine runs ok, don't worry about the message.

Thanks to both . And I agree with both of you.

    It is working.

I should not attempt to fix.

I just wonder WHY MS would drop support for one of the best OS they ever invented ? At least before XP.

I get the same message on my Wifes machine which has a Nvidia Geforce FX 5200. This one I WILL NOT mess with. The reason should be obvious LOL.

I can somewhat understand the problem with the older GeForce4 MX 440. I MIGHT attempt this one. But again it is doing all that is realy required of it so maybe I should leave well enough alone.

But with further investigation and a bit of housecleaning on that machine today and getting rid of some no longer used stuff and a couple of programs that were not working properly ( locked up when shut down ) and things ( including video ) seem to be quite a bit better.

The 440 might not. But the MX 5200 may. Will need to check that out.

I would imagine it's because Win98's at the end of the support cycle. Remember the uproar when they said they'd no longer support it? That changed of course but I believe the support extension they gave us was for critical update type things. I would imagine they decided they'd fix the security holes for a while but they weren't going to go any further than that. At least that's the way I took it at the time they extended the support life cycle.

That said, I agree with the others. I wouldn't worry about it. I've used umpteen different drivers over the years that weren't "digitally signed" and never had a problem with any of them. This problem never has worried me past and it still doesn't. I have several right now on XP that at the time of installation I was warned of grave consequenses if I continued on with the install. :) Whatever they were I have yet to see them. This puter ranks right up there with the best of them when it comes to stability. Now that I think about it, about the only drivers I've ever had a problem with were those that I downloaded from MS's Windows Update. I learned in a hurry to stay away from them. ;)

I tried the drivers that Welshjim pointed me to but still have the same message.

But as others have suggested I am not going to worry about it.

Thanks to all for the help.

But actually, if that machine held up at all after the weekend that there were 6 Grandkids, 4 Neices or Nephews fighting over and beating the hello out of it I can't complain. I had to come to the rescue ( restart and PRAY ) more than once when they tried installing or playing newer software ( games ) that were just not meant for that old a machine. "

But anyhow. I got it cleaned up and the Nieces and Nephews ( from next door ) tell me that it is working much better. At least the screen is not going blank inbetween programs. So it will serve its' purpose for awhile yet.
