I am using XP home. Recently had a HD crash and was able to recover most of the files and clone to another drive. One of the casualties that still remains is the loss of the little file icons that appeared ahead of file names in a directory utility that I love. Here is the e-mail I sent the vendor and his answer. I thought I would likely get more help here than trying to contact Microsoft. Thanks for any help

I really miss them as they made it much easier to recognize files of interest. I have tried removing and reinstalling the program, but that hasn't helped.

    Answer...

"Those file type icons are put there by windows and are based on the associations with the file extensions. You could manually associate some programs but there are also icons for dlls and other types of files that you can't create by associations. I don't know how to do it. Could you contract Microsoft about this? "

You could try the Repair Icons function in Tweakui XP - under Repair.

Thanks for the tip Pete, but that did not work. I should have mentioned that the icons still appear in Window Explorer, just not in Power File. I figure it is probably a registry setting that got changed or corrupted some how. I was surpised that the vendor, Canyon Software, couldn't offer a better suggestion.

Can you right click on these files and perhaps (Properties?) find a Change Icon option? Then all you have to do is find the icons and enter the address in the box.
I know where to find icons for Win98. Some of these addresses are still correct for WinXP
    http://www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/icon.html Click on Icon Finder.
With some searching you might find those for WinXP.

Thanks for the link Welshjim. The Powerfile people say they are the same icons that Windows uses. They look like the ones in Explorer. I'll see what I can turn up in your link.

I have talked to Canyon Software again and it turns out the icons aren't unique to PowerFile. PowerFile queries Windows and uses the same icons that Explorer uses. The icons are still there in Explorer.
Guess I will muck around in the registry to see what I can find. UGH!
