    Hi,
I know this has been talked about and I've read through quite a few and printed stuff out.....so hear goes:

I have a friend that has a HP computer that has Windows ME, she would like to go to a Windows XP. I've seen where it seems that most say you can just upgrade but she doesn't really have but a few pictures to save and that can be done easily, the rest of the stuff like her printer, Earthlink connection, etc...can be re-installed.

So would you all recommend a upgrade or a clean install? Also which version: XP Home Edition or XP Pro? What is the difference? I have XP Home on mine (and love it).

I also read and will just copy and paste this, but I realize this below is upgrading with a full version, but her computer only has rescue disk with it and that is it....am I going to need anything else if I would do an upgrade.
    "Clean Install Using Upgrade CD?
One of the most frequently asked questions is whether it is possible to do a clean install using an upgrade version. The answer is yes. At some point during setup, Windows XP will ask you to insert your qualifying media, to ensure that you are eligible for the upgrade. The media must be a retail Windows 98, 98 Second Edition, Millennium Edition, NT 4.0, or 2000 CD-ROM, be it an Upgrade or Full version. You cannot, however, use a rescue CD that you got from a PC maker. "

Thanks for all the help and look forward to the replies and hope I can help my friend like her computer a little better

    thanks, Rhonda

    Hi Rhonda
A clean install every time if possible and in this case it clearly is possible. An upgrade over 98 or Me that is working perfectly is generally OK, but a clean install is the preferred route. Clean Install
As your friend has been running Me and presumably does not require the additional security, remote acces and a few other 'corporate' facilities built into XP Pro I would recommend XP Home. See XP Comparision Guide
A slight stumbling block here in that your frend has only a Recovery CD.
However, if you have access to an original 98SE or Me CD that can be used as 'evidence' of a previous version.

Failing that you have two options ....

Bite the bullet and fork out for a full copy of XP Home or

    Upgrade over Me

Thanks for all the info!! Looks like the XP Home will do her fine.

Also looks like though I will have to get the full version for her though, as I know all she has is the 3 recovery CD's. I have reformatted her ME before and asked if those were the only CD's that came with it and she said yes and I know that is all I know she has to it. But with the FULL version I DO NOT need the CD that came with the computer, correct?

I would still do a "clean install" with the full version? Since I know I do not have the other CD's I cannot do the "upgrade ", correct?

    Thank you, Rhonda

If you mean can't use the XP disc that's labeled "upgrade" to do a clean install, that's correct because you don't have the WinME OS disc. But as Pete pointed, if you borrowed either a WinME or 98 disc, the XP labeled "upgrade" could be use to do a clean install.

A XP labeled "upgrade" or "retail" can be used to upgrade WinME.

I thought I had read in another post the CD had to come from "your" computer...well heck I have another friend who has ME and my Mom had a old computer with it, so I can just borrow theirs? wwaahooo!! Though the one link from Shopping Yahoo had some great prices on the Full Version from about $79 and up...for that price I would probably just buy that.

    Thanks for all the help!!!!

Any suggestions for when I do this? Is it pretty self explanitory? Does is walk ya through it I guess I should ask? I did print off some stuff from some web sites.

Either see the link I posted above or follow my notes below these were written foir a clean install of XP when XP was already installed - hopefully much the same with Me installed - suggest you print them out....

Check in the BIOS that the boot order is set CD/Floppy/HD

Boot from the Windows CD "“ follow the on screen prompts "¦..

To set up Windows XP now press ENTER

    Accept the Licence Agreement F8

Searching for previous versions of Windows ....

At this (?) stage an Upgrade CD will ask you to insert the CD for a qualifying OS, e.g, Me, although with Me already on the drive, maybe not.

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows without repairing press ESC

Ensure that the drive/partition selected is the one on which XP (98) was set up and press D to delete the selected partition.

To delete the partition press ENTER

To delete the partition press L "“ heed the warnings and DOUBLE CHECK before hitting L

To create a partition in the unpartitioned space press C

Accept max size and press ENTER

To set up Windows XP on the selected item (Partition (New Raw)) press ENTER

Format the partition using the NTFS file system "“ preferred unless you want an install of Win 98 to access data on the drive/partition, if so choose FAT.

    Set up is formatting "¦â€¦

When format is complete XP will install.

When complete install your antivirus and firewall** before you even think of connecting to the Internet. Update the virus definitions immediately and then go to Windows Updates and download the Critical updates.

** XP SP2 has an improved firewall which will be turned on by default, but don't forget to load antivirus software before connecting to the Internet - and update the definitions before doing anything else.

Yes, for 9X OS's that can be done.

Any suggestions for when I do this?
    At any time.
