I am attempting to network two computers, both running XP Pro. When I run ipconfig on the first machine, all appears ok. But on the second computer I get the message " media disconnected ". What is the problem, and how do I rectify it.

More information is needed. How are you connecting the computers? Hub and cables? Crossover cable?

    DRD,
The two computers are setup as follows. The first has on-board lan ( nvida chipset ) with AMD XP3000+ Processor. The second has a Surecom ethernet pci card, running Pentium 233 processor. When enabling the first computers on-board lan, we kept getting the message " network cable unpluged ". So I fitted an AcerLAN Ethernet pci card, and this runs ok. When we run ipconfig, and ping 127.0.0.1, we get a good result.

On the second computer, when we run ipconfig, we get the message " media disconnected ". This is where our problem is. Cable wise, I manufactured a cross-over cable, and then also tried a factory made cross-over cable, both with the same result. There is no hub utilized between these two computers. Both computers are running XP Pro. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

You might try uninstalling the card in device manager and then rebooting and letting the system find it again. It may also be a problem with improper protocol binding, but I'm not sure if that would give this message.

I have uninstalled both cards, and reinstalled them, I have tried windows drivers and oem drivers on the ethernet cards, I have updated the motherboard drivers on the computer with onboard lan, still the same result. I am now looking for a brick wall to bury my head into. Any other suggestions please.

It may be that the second NIC is defective or just has bad contacts.
