I've never been able to figure out how the history function works.
It seems to have a mind of it's own.

Is there a default setting ?

You can change the number of days that you want to keep the history by going to Tools-->Options-->Privacy. If I remember right, the default is set at 7 days. Not sure if there is a way to delete more then one at a time.

There is a way, just like with with mail. With History, click the "Go" button in the Menu bar, select History. Click on the top item, and hold. Then scroll down as far as you need. All the items will be highlighted, and right click|delete.
It took me years to figure out what Go was doing, but this works.
If this is listed somewhere else, sorry, I never saw it.

Sorry, I have to take that back. This is the disadvantage of using too many browsers, and treating them equally. It work with NS7.2, but not with FF.

To answer your second post about selectively removing a post, with Firefox, you can follow Westside's direction or use Control + H to bring up the history screen. By right clicking to highlight a particular day and then clicking delete from the drop-down menu you can remove the day's worth of posts or using the right click to highlight a particular post you can do the same to remove that individual post.

I should have said that individual entries can be removed in Firefox, but not an whole bunch. I set to keep my History for 2 days.

    FF History

There are two other methods (that I know of), as well ...
    1. Click on View > Sidebar > History.

    2. Right-click anywhere in the menu bar or navigation toolbar, select "Customize" and drag the History icon to the toolbar. After that, opening the History sidebar is a one-click process.
