I recently formatted the hard drive on my old, locally built, computer (about 6 years old) and reinstalled my Win98SE. I didn't make any hardware changes. However, I saw a recent post that indicated that I should have saved all my drivers in a folder and burned them to a CD - too late now.

I was able to install the driver for my NETGEAR FA311 DSL ethernet and log onto the internet. I updated my AVG and Zone Alarm and downloaded and installed all the 98SE updates. However, I can't seem to get a dialup configured and this computer will be used on a dialup connection. I looked at an old Belarc printout that shows my modem as AOpen FM56-P 56K Data Fax Speakerphone PCI Modem. Under other devices it lists as an Other Device an AOpen PCI Modem Enumerator. I have an old AOpen CD that came with the computer but I can't seem to get the computer to find the modem. At one point I thought I had it done but the AOpen CD asked that the Win95 Installation CD be inserted - I don't have a Win 95 CD. I tried the Win 98 CD to no avail.

    Any suggestions from anyone?

Install the modem enumerator first, and then it will find the modem.
May need a reboot after installing the enumerator.

A couple of things to look at.

    1-- and reinstalled my Win98SE.

Did you have 98SE before you formated ? I think apparrently you did.

This is a VERY GOOD REASON for partitioning a Hard drive. Then you can keep drivers and other downloaded stuff on other than the C: drive where they will remain if C: is formated.

I NEVER download ANYTHING on any machine to the C: drive.

I know there are Pros & Cons about partitioning. But I believe there are far more Pros.

2-- At one point I thought I had it done but the AOpen CD asked that the Win95 Installation CD be inserted - I don't have a Win 95 CD. I tried the Win 98 CD to no avail.

I think you need to somehow get 98 drivers.

    A further note.

I also install VERY Little other than the OS to the C: drive.

Mron & Billy Bob - Thanks for all your help. I downloaded and ran the driver that you located at the AOpen site. Everything seemed to go fine and all indications were that the AOpen modem was installed. I then rebooted the machine.

However, when I tried the dialer, I get an Error 630 dialog box that says:

"Dialup Networking was unable to complete the connection. The modem is not responding properly. Please verify the modem is plugged in to the computer and to the telephone line."

Billy Bob, I had 98SE with all the updates on this machine. I plan to give it away and I used the Eraser program and then formatted the hard drive. I then reinstalled my 98SE system and started trying to get to the internet to get the updates to 98Se and AVG/ZA which I was able to do through my cable internet connection. But I ran out of luck with the dialup access. I don't know how to partition a drive but it looks like I may be learning soon.

I may have to wait until tax season is over before I can pursue this much further - work in a tax office.

There are some fixes you could try on This page
and there is a mention of the 630 error Here at the KB "How to Troubleshoot Modem Problems in Windows 98/98 Second Edition" that may help if you get some time.
