    Hiya ppl :D

need a little help with my notepad program, i know its only a basic little program before you start telling me to get a proper word processor program but its ideal for editing web pages and scripts.

the problem i have is that for some reason whenever i open it up, it starts out in a small window, its not maxed to the screen anymore, and its starting to bug me now. I have included a screenshot which i took to show you what i mean:

    Notepad screenshot

Can someone tell me what to edit to get it back to normal so that when i open it it opens maxed out to screen borders??

    Cheers for the help

    Marty,

It should be as easy as dragging a corner to make it larger or clicking on the upper right hand corner of the window and click on the box between the - and the X.

Right click on the shortcut you use to open it and choose properties. In the box where it says run, select maximized.

I use notepad as well to make quick edits to html and lists and such. The problem I have is that sometimes when I save a file and then re-open it, all my formatting is ******* up.

As you can imagine this wreaks havoc with editing html. Any ideas on how to correct this?

    thescribe--This comes from Notepad's Help.
"Notepad is a basic text editor that you can use to create simple documents. The most common use for Notepad is to view or edit text (.txt) files, but many users find Notepad a simple tool for creating Web pages.

Because Notepad supports only very basic formatting, you cannot accidentally save special formatting in documents that need to remain pure text. This is especially useful when creating HTML documents for a Web page because special characters or other formatting may not appear in your published Web page or may even cause errors.

You can save your Notepad files as Unicode, ANSI, UTF-8, or big-endian Unicode. These formats provide you greater flexibility when working with documents that use different character sets. "
    Are you experiencing anything different?

Solve this by writing the html files using notepad and saving as plain text or saving as html. (you must type my_file.html in the svae dialog and delete the .txt extension) If no joy, then you can just rename the saved file from my_file.html.txt to my_file.html. Windows will give an alert so choose yes to 'are you sure you want to do this?'.

Then, future edits can be done to the html file in notepad and the formatting will be retained. Just drag the html file icon into the notepad window.

I use a free text editor called Win32 pad. It's a great notepad replacement because it can save directly as many different formats and retains all formatting, plus it has an option to show line numbers, which is handy when debugging scripts and such. There's no install either, it's a standalone app, just run the executable. It also has unlimited memory so can open any size document in it. (and looks just like notepad too) You can d/l it here:

I'll give that editor a whirl.

With notepad, basically what happens is:

I open my FTP program to edit my websites.

When I click on a file to edit, it opens in notepad.

I do the editing that needs to be done (which of course at this stage is usually fixing one or two minor glitches--no major overhauls or revisions).

Then I save the file and close or close and click yes to save the file.

Sometimes when I reopen the page, all the spaces between lines have been eliminated (no major formatting, mind you because this is Html I'm working with) and I'm left with one long paragraph containing all the text.

It's actually just a minor inconvenience, but I've never discovered any rhyme or reason as to why or when it happens.
