Downloading large files kills my network connection

I have a serious problem. First, I have comcast cable internet, connected to a 4 port router. When I try to download large files (file sizes vary), the transfer rate slows down and then just goes rapidly to zero, rendering my internet connection (and my connection to my network) useless until I reboot. This problem happens ONLY on my computer (there are 3 computers on the network including mine). Any ideas? This is especially apparent when downloading from usenet (I use grabit...this problem doesn't happen on other PC's on my network).

I have tried XP, XP SP-2, Windows MCE 2005, 2 different NIC Cards including the one on my motherboard, 2 different routers, all peripherals in my system updated, different ethernet cords, firewalls are off (router and in windows) running adware/spyware apps, motherboard BIOS updated, all hardware drivers up to date, running anti virus/anti trojan apps, but this problem persists.

Please help me, as this problem is driving me crazy. I know it's not the router because I have tried 2 different routers, and I know it's not the comcast cable internet or the cable modem because I have connected the cable modem straight to my computer (thru ethernet) and this problem still occurs. I also seem to get random disconnects even when I don't download anything.

*EDIT - When I boot my PC in safe mode, this problem doesn't happen!

Download and run HijackThis, save a log & post it here.
I want to see the log not so much to check for spyware, but to see the processes running in a normal boot as opposed to safe mode. Obviously there is some driver or software running in normal mode that does not run in safe mode. perhaps we can spot the culprit or setting that needs to be altered.

There's no apparant running process that would seem to interfere. Try using Task manager to kill running processes such as trojan hunter, avg, etc, one at a time until problem goes away.

Have you tired shutting grabit down ?

Do the other PCs also use grabit ?

Does it happen if the other PCs are shut down ?

    What is grabit anyway ?

The other PC on my same network that uses grabit does not have this problem.
The PC that has this problem experiences this problem even when grabit is not loaded up. The problem just happens when large files are being downloaded. Grabit is a usenet reading program. I will try uninstalling grabit and reporting the results.

    1. wuauclt.exe, do the other machines have windows automatic updates running as yours does?
    2. Also, MSBNTray.exe, on Windows XP, you do not need the MSBN
software to administer the base station. Uninstall it in Add or Remove
Programs. Thereafter, just go into the IP address of the base station in
your browser address line if you need to make changes. This pgm will connect to www at intervals to test if connectivity is present, possibly interfering w/ your downloads because it assumes some control over tcp/ip.

I got rid of MSBNTray completely. I even uninstalled grabit. wuauclt.exe is not running at all. The problem is still persisting.

Per your log above, Windows Auto Update is loaded & running:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe
    Kill it via Admin Tools/Services

Not sure what else to say execept this is what I would do. I'd have a browser page opened to a large file d/l and then I'd kill processes one by one until the problem either persists or goes away. Then if find the culprit process or service I'd disable it.

    TonyT,

I did what you said and still, the problem persists. Now, I totally reformatted my HD, and reinstalled windows. Again, I only have one program on the PC other than the OS itself which is grabit. Again, the same result. Safe mode however alleviates this problem, but I don't wanna boot in safe mode every time I wanna download large files.

Which still suggest it is a problem with a driver/proccess loading, you'd have to figure out what's the difference in loaded drivers/proccesses in safe & normal mode.

seems others have issues downloading when using grabit:
    http://www.shemes.com/community/viewforum.php?f=3&sid=415abcce0991f547474243ab583d3bf4

Do ALL downloads cut off or just grabit downlloads?
    Try this:
click here to download this file ( 87 MB game) and test browser downloading and see if it cuts off. If it cuts off, then (1) your IE browser download settings are corrupted, possibly by grabit or (2) some other service, driver or process is interfering. There are likely NO other possible causes other than a needed/required service or process is disabled.

WHAT ?? You plan on going online with no Anti-Virus software.

Did you by any stretch of the imagination get ALL WINDOWS UPDATES etc. and try the download BEFORE installing grabit ?

BTW. What is grabit supossed to do for you ?

If this has been asked before then I missed it.

How is that PC connected to the Router ? Is it using an onboard NIC or a plugin NIC ?

If using a plugin card and there does exist and onboard interface is it disabled ?

If using onboard is the plugin card removed ?

BB, some answers to your questions.

WHAT ?? You plan on going online with no Anti-Virus software.
I go online all the time w/out an AV program. No danger either. I recently restored using a Ghost image w/out AV pgm, went online for a week before installing NAV again. But I have every NAV feature disabled and manually scan my downloads.

BTW. What is grabit supossed to do for you ?
Grabit is a newsreader app, used for downloading MBs of news messages as well as other files. Newsgroups are the best place to d/l mp3s, movies, etc.

If using a plugin card and there does exist and onboard interface is it disabled ?
That won't matter, XP can have multiple nics and manage them well, whereas win98 had some issues w/ multiple like hardware devices.

    TonyT,

Well, I uninstalled grabit completely and I was able to download that game on the link you posted.

But still, I don't think grabit has anything to do with the problem I am facing. It is also worth mentioning that FTP transfers suffer from this problem as well.
This didn't seem like such a problem until after Comcast did their 4mbps upgrade a little while ago.

I am really at a loss as to the problem.

I think I have finally fixed the problem.

I think the problem was that I didn't have the **** network drivers installed (I am using the motherboard's built in NIC) that came with my motherboard. I installed drivers from the 'net before. Grait downloads work fine for now, as do web based downloads.

Thanx for all those that helped.

    Billybob,

Off subject but I agree with TonyT on the AV program:

I have been running without a virus program for over 5 years now and it is ONLY recently, after violating one of my cardinal rules - NEVER EVER use Outlook or Outlook Expres as a mail client), I got one. I was helping someone setup Outlook on their PC and accessed my mail through Outlook. There must have been something in one of the emails that caused me to get a runaway spoolsv.exe.

The lesson that I learned: "NEVER violate my cardinal rule about Outlook or Outlook Express! "

I use Yahoo for my mail client.

    George

WooHoo! Glad you figured it out and hopefully the problem will remain solved. Problems like this are usually basic in nature.

Now if only I can fix the problem with transferring from my PC to XBOX via FTP...Same thing happens but I never found a fix for it...oh well, I guess I will just boot to safe mode for that
