Hi ! I've got this problem where when my computer goes into low power mode, it sometimes gets stuck there. Normally all I have to do is move the mouse or type on the keyboard to get the windows desktop to reappear. Whenever it feels like it, however, moving the mouse or typing on the keyboard does nothing to bring it out of low power mode & make the desktop appear. The only way I can get it to work again is kill it at the tower, as nothing else works when in this state. When I start it back up, it works ok again, until it doesn't. The only thing I have set to power down is the monitor, after 30 minutes of inactivity. I have the blank screen screen saver set to go on after 15 minutes, then the monitor to power down after 30. Does anybody know what's causing this, & what I can do to fix it?

98's power management is a touchy thing. I would disable the monitor power off and see if the problem goes away. If it does not, the drive is the one not responding to the wake up call.
I have a 98SE/XP SP2 dual boot here, when running 98, I have this problem.
In XP, no problem at all.

markp62: Thanks for replying to my post. Just to clarify, you want me to disable, at least temporarily, any & all low power modes, in my case, the monitor, just run always on, never standby, or power down the monitor or hard drive. I'd figure I wouldn't have the exact same problem, then, sinc it wouldn't go into low power mode at all, unless you mean with just the screen saver set, it wouldn't bring up the desktop either, if the problem's with the drive & not the power management. Is that what you mean? Please clarify.

I am only suggesting disabling the power down of the monitor after 30 minutes.
If you still have the problem, renable the monitor settings, then disable the hard drives power down.
Either your video card has a problem waking up, or your drive is.
Standby mode can be left set as it is.

So far, I haven't had the problem again, but I've got the monitor set to stay on, & the only thing I have set is the blank screen saver, to come on after 15 minutes, so I wouldn't expect to have the same problem, unless I couldn't bring up the desktop from the screen saver, then I suppose that would be a similar problem. If I re-enable the power down of the monitor, however, I'm sure I'll have the same problem back, intermittently, & annoyingly.

Thanks TonyT for the suggestion. I downloaded the file, after clicking on your link, & finding the download link. If you haven't already, perhaps you'd like to read my original post to better familiarize yourself with the entire problem. From what little there was to read about this troubleshooter, I believe it said it'd show something when it resumes from suspend. That's kind of the problem: When this thing intermittently occurs, it doesn't resume from suspend, (if suspend's the same as just powering down the monitor after a given time) so I have to wonder if it'll still show me something, because I have to kill it at the tower, to get back to a desktop after this occurs. Any additional feedback would be greatly appreciated, before I install this thing.

I installed & ran the PMTroubleshooter that TonyT suggested. The problem finally occurred(see original post)again, & no red ink(per the troubleshooter's readme)indicating errors or problem areas, were detected. According to what I read about this thing, it's for having problems going into suspend mode(same as low power mode?). It doesn't say anything about helping with problems coming back out, which is where mine are. When it happened today, I tried pushing the escape key, & got this fatal exception error 0E at 015F:BFF9DBA7
I read about it here :http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;209321 but I didn't install from the hard drive, & I didn't have the problem after installation, which would have been a while ago, not recent. My symptoms are totally different from what the aforementioned page says causes this. Any additional help would be appreciated. Thanks !

Have you checked the various areas of Power Management in the Control Panel ? I just looked at mine and everything is set to Always On and Never.

Also someone can tell you where to look in the Registry, Find and stop Power Profile from loading at bootup.

I think Power Profile is what it is. I am not sure because I use Startup Cop to control what loads at startup and I must have removed Power Profile as it does not show in the list.

Thanks Billy Bob for your quick response to my latest reply to my own post. I have mine set to always on, system standby never, monitor 30 minutes, hard disk never. I also have the blank screen saver set to come on in 15 minutes of inactivity, prior to the low power mode kicking in. I want to use the low power mode, otherwise I could set it all to never. After all, it should work. As for the power profiles, which can be disabled in msconfig in windows 98, I read some tech support thing somewhere about start-up programs, & it said to leave both settings for the power profiles in there alone. I take it if I did prevent those 2 settings from loading at start-up, I wouldn't be able to use the power management feature at all, if I have that right.
