I guess what I'm really asking is how do I determine what processors will work with my motherboard? I have an Asus P5A which currently runs on the AMD K6 3D 475mhz. I need a minimum of 800mhz, but have no clue what else to look for.

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Shannon

Need to determin what "socket" the mobo is. Can also look on Asus's and get ALL the info you need.

So if I'm reading this table correctly, the highest speed this motherboard can support is 550mhz?

The following table shows the support for CPU / Motherboard

:( Major disappointment!!! I need a minimum of 800mhz.... so that means I have to rebuild completely?

No need to rebuild completely - at the very least you need a new mobo + CPU and probably memory - your existing memory may not be compatible with a newer mobo and faster memory will give better performance. Although your existing hard drive is likely to be slow compared with current drives it should suffice, but it would be a good opportunity to upgrade that to a larger, faster drive. Your optical drives should be fine, but you may need to look at the compatibility of your video card with a newer mobo. it would also be a sound idea to check that the PSU is adequate for the updated components.

You say that you need a minimum of 800 MHz - for what in particular? Have you also checked the memory requirements and also the video requirements?

Just upgraded the memory and video card this past week. My son just received the newest Sims game and I am tired of sharing our main computer w/him to play his games.... so I thought I'd upgrade our older computer so he can play on that one. It never crossed my mind that the cpu wouldn't be fast enough, or that the m/b wouldn't be upgradeable to our needs. It's a home-built computer that we put together about 5 years ago. The m/b is an Asus P5A, currently running 320mb SDRAM Dimm, installed nVidia GeForce 4 128mb graphics card, using Sound Blaster PCI 128, Samsung DVD/CDRom combo, Win XP.

Do you have any recommendations on a relatively inexpensive, yet decent m/b and processor that would be compatible with the above?

    Thanks!
    Shannon

I have used Asus motherboards and AMD CPU's myself and in PC's built for friends for several years and have been well satisfied with them and would recommend them. There are many others, of course, but I have no first hand experience of them.

What I need to know is what type of RAM is currently fitted to that PC - PC 133 .... PC1600, 2100, ....?

Download Everest and run it on that computer and go to Motherboard > SPD and post the details - specifically Memory Speed.

    Everst Info

I ran Everest on the computer in question and am posting the results of the hardware scan below. Based on this information, can you suggest a m/b and cpu that will allow me to utilize all the other components that I already have, including the case? I'd like to keep this upgrade as inexpensive and simple as possible, while getting the speed that I need. I appreciate your help very much!

    Shenanagins,

    1. Your motherboard uses an AT power supply. A mb that uses an 800 MHZ CPU will use an ATX power supply. They are Totally different animals so that means a new power supply as well as mb and cpu. Since the case is also an AT case, you need to replace that to go with the ATX power supply. You will also need new memory for the new mb and CPU.

    2. As you can see, the changes are pointing to a new system.

    George

So are you saying that there aren't any motherboards that can utilize the SDRAM chips that I just purchased, either? This is starting to give me a headache! *sigh* Any ideas - ballpark figures - on estimated cost to replace the m/b, cpu, powersupply and case?

    Thanks!

I'm calling up another BBS member to help out on this - prices in the UK bear little resemblance to those in the States :(

    Really?
My Asus P5A board uses an ATX power-supply and that's all that ASUS refers to in the online version of the manual...

Of course, that current ATX power supply may not pack enough juice for a new processor so a new ATX power supply may still be in order.

    Cheers,

    ICE

    Pete,
Can you give me any suggestions on what m/b and cpu would be best to look for, and will I need to upgrade the power supply and case, as suggested in another post? Is there a m/b that can utilize the RAM and graphics card I already have?

You continued patience and help in this thread is much appreciated!

    Suggestions

Shenanigans: I have personally had good luck with all my Ebay transactions and would suggest it as a cost efficient way to get where you want to be.
The minimum you need will put you in the socket 370 category for Intel processors. The 370 is either a P3 or Celeron processor with speeds up to 1.1 Ghz. My knowledge of comparable AMD based systems is lacking.
Have attached a link to give you a cost idea. The board/processor up for auction should accept all your existing hardware(video/memory) but it is wise to check with the board manufacturer for compatability.
