You have a full set of security options available if you are using NTFS and rather fewer if using FAT32.

In general, you will limit what a particular user can do on a NT-family PC based on what groups their user account belongs to. Most restrictive would be to have them a member of the Guest group and no others. User would be next, and so on up the list of standard groups.

Or you could create a new group and set priv. levels for it.

Do a google search for windows local group security and you will find huge amounts of information. After you've read and digested the basics, post back with any specific questions you might have.

In order to restrict access to files, it is necessary to have NTFS, but without you can restrict the actions of users. For example, installing/removing software, changing settings, etc.

Check the MS Knowledge Base and online documentation for information. This can be a complicated subject.

On XP Home, just set the user account as Limited and also set XP to require a password to logon, rather than being automatic. Another thing to set is that user switching logs off the current user.
