have an xp machine that the recycle bin not correct and not allowing any access to. manually deleted c:\recycled from a dos prompt and now it is back on the tree correctly but when I right click on the desktop icon i get no functionality to it nor does double clicking open it up.

must be a way to recreate a functioning desktop icon - i hope.

yep, found that web site before but couldnt find the right line number. thats how i found out how to delete recycled from the dos prompt. will give the .reg file a try. already ran spybot and found only 22 bugs which aint that bad.

also, just found out that ctrl-alt-delete aint working either nor does running the executable for task manager work. nothing happens. am running trendmicro and pandasoftware from the web and so far nothing found.

client says this was an upgrade from ME. big mistake cuz it looks like maybe me was corrupt and like the saying goes garbage in garbage out.

gghartmann--Suppose you are familiar with Start|Run|type sfc /scannow |OK. It is probably going to be necessary to have the WinXP CD handy.

P.S. Don't forget to scan with the spyware detectors.

yep, forgot all about that one. have tried everything else will give that one a try also. this system is wacked out. even tho only 256mb memory its slower than a turtle. found 22 spywares, 220 adwares and 3 trojans. they might have done some damage behind the scenes. now not even able to connect back to the web thru my router. its a dimension 8100 and it should be responding better than it is. shes got more junk on here and when i try to uninstall them it gives an error and wont uninstall. have manually cleaned the registry of some items but still to sluggish. might just bite the bullet and backup data and rebuild from scratch. have spent to many hours already and still only half way thru tuning it up.

ran sfc not sure if it did anything. with the .reg file was able to get recycle bin to be functional. still not able to get task manager to work either by the command itself or by ctrl-alt-delete.

this machine is clean as clean can be. have run spybot, adaware, spywareblaster and cwshredder and yahoo's toolbar spy checker and all is okay. no more virus's found either. have worked on to many 3.0ghz processors so when I have a low end p4 i sometimes forget there not as fast as with the new ht technology.

any idea on task manager ???

nope that one did not work. going to rebuild this beast from scratch. even for a p4 / 1.4ghz its not responding like it should. now after running the vbscript half the icons in the toolbar wont load.

thanks for all the assistance i think this machine just needs a good new starting point.
