When I start up Disk Clean Up, It will always see what space I can save by compressing old files. Is there any way to disable this becasue I don't want it to compress anything, and it takes too long.

Not AFAIK - just be sure to uncheck 'Compress old files - or whatever' in the choices dialogue box.

On the other hand why use Disk Clean Up at all? - I have doubts about it's reliability. Just run it to the choices dialogue box and it says I have no temp files to delete - Huh - Start > Run > %temp% gives me 11 Mb of temp files :D

FWIW - IMO forget Disk Cleanup and do two simple things ....

Firstly set IE to empty Temporary Internet Files on close.

Secondly Start > Run > %temp% > OK and delete the lot.

Most of the other categories Disk Clean Up offers to delete are generally wanted - like the Office Installation files - I chose to keep those when installing Office 2003 and Downloaded Program Files - I need those otherwise there is a delay when a specific website requires them, especially Windows Validation which stores the confirmation applet in that folder.

There may be other views on this, but it works for me!

You can run disk cleanup from a command line and do what you want. First click start run and type the following:

    cleanmgr /sageset:n

Click ok and a window will open allowing you to choose the things you want to clean. Select what you want and then click ok. This alone won't do the cleaning. Once you've done this, once again click start>run and then type the following:

    cleanmgr /sagerun:n

Now you'll see windows do it's thing with the disk cleanup tool without any other input from you. The settings you choose in the sageset:n command get stored in the registry and you don't have to do this again unless sometime in the future you decide you want to change the settings. So from now on, if you want to run disk cleanup, you only have to run cleanmgr /sagerun:n and disk cleanup will run with your previous settings.

    Edit:
More info about using disk cleanup from the command line here.

Hi Pete: I saw your advice and wanted to use it, but when you said delete the lot, I ran into a little trouble? Do I need to right click on each file and delete each separately? There are 12 files on that folder right now, before deletion, I know I am not all that sharp! Can it be done in one step? Also I have 4 files temp files I can not seem to eradicate "~DF91C4.temp" "~DFFE30.temp" "~DF227.temp" & "~DFEED3.temp" Am I wrong , but you should be able to delete any TEMP File, right? Thanks, loonychoons

Click on the first file and then while holding the shift key down, click on the last file. All the files in between will be highlighted, then right click and delete.

    As a general rule, true.

What's happenning is that an app or system process has a hold of it and is using it until the end of "session ". Either find out which and disable it, or reboot and try, or do it in safe mode.

To add to what Charles posted ....

Those files which will not delete are in use - just leave them - they will delete the next time you run through this process, but there will be others in use at that time. You can't - and don't need to delete those remaining 'in use' files - a few Kb at the most.

    Charles & Pete

Thanks Guys: I was Going to---- File --select all-- and then---- Delete, but I have found that if this folder has any of the undeletable files in it, then none of the files will delete. Obviously by highlighting and trying to delete had the same results? I have found and am now using a small program called "Disk Cleaner" Have either of you heard of it? What do you think of it? Thanks again loonychoons http://www.xs4all.nl/~mp2004/

    Hi Loony,

but I have found that if this folder has any of the undeletable files in it, then none of the files will delete.
That is true if "all" is selected. If you try a range and the non-deletable files are not in that range, they will delete.

I have found and am now using a small program called "Disk Cleaner" Have either of you heard of it?
No, I use something else for those rare occasions when I need to do this.

I should have explained this better ....

In the Temp folder view that Start > Run > %temp% brings up, click on the column header 'Date modified' to sort the files by date. Repeated clicking toggles the date order between ascending and descending. For convenience sort in descending order with the latest files at the top. Click on the first file with yesterday's date - hold down Shift and click on the last file. These will all delete. Some of the older files of today's date will also delete - apart from those in use, as previously mentioned. As I mentioned before a few Kb of retained temp files is neither here nor there!
