I lost my netscape bookmarks also. I shut down my computer to reset cable modem. When I restarted and opened netscape all my bookmarks were gone. I followed Ramona's directions and there was no bookmarks.bak file. I then followed westsides directions and my file ends in r:1.4
    Please help. Thanks.

    Welcome to the Forum, st857!

    st857,

I split your post from the older thread.

For everyone's information, Westside's recommendation was to add the command line -p profilename to the desktop shortcut.

    What file ends in r:1.4.

Depending on your OS, look here to see if you can locate your Profile:
    Windows 2000 or Windows XP:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles

NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
    4. Disable "Hide File Extensions for Known Files. "
    5. Click OK.

    Windows 95/98
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles

Is there more than one ProfileName folder listed under Profiles? If so, do you recognize your original folder?

In the Profiles subfolder, drill down to the *.slt folder, and look for the bookmarks.html file. Do you see that file?

    file

    Ramona,
I found the bookmarks.html file but it is empty. There was only 1 profile named "default "
The r:1.4 file I refered to was the file westside mentioned in the other thread.
    Thanks

I looked at my previous replies, and I don't see any reference to r:1.4. In fact, I don't know what that would be.
I mentioned and quoted Ramona's website, as a way to bring up the profile manager, so that you can, later add the name of the profile, if desired.
If you are not aware of the existance of any preexisting profiles, and adding the -p does not bring any choice except for "default ", and, you did not back the bookmarks.html file, you have a problem.
The default file, which contains a few bookmarks, initially, but can be used, and is used by many people as the one and only bookmarks file should not be empty.
Right click on the file, and see if any properties at the bottom are checked, like Read only. Also, if you see the post of mine which has a reference to the "r:1.4 ", please give the URL or something, because I can't find anything to that effect.

    Hi!
No wonder I did not know what was going on, since I could not find any reference to r:1.4, anyplace, and I read all the posts repeatedly.
I have this: "user_pref( "browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone ", "rv:1.7.2 "); and later in the same post, I have: "If yes, it is the correct one for Netscape 7.2, but if you see any other number after the rv "
I wanted to establish if NS7.2 was, indeed, used. There was no reply to that question. If you found, let me know where. But I am assuming that you did reply and meant rv:1.4. If that is the case, you were not using NS7.2, but rather 7.1.
Sometimes it takes a while to get things straight. If this is correct, we are back to square one.
Ramona's reply #3 at the same link is as good as I can come. Going back to your original post, regardless of the version, you chances of recovering your bookmarks depends on how you deleted the profile created by your son.
I found it very difficult to get rid of profiles, but this will happen if there is a prompt to delete all files, and it is followed.
I am using NS7.2 with four diffierent profile, and all profiles in use have a different name, and are located in different directories. I doubt that you have done anything like that. You will have to try to remember what you did.
And, why did you get that prompt? And, you say rv:1.4 , when it should have beem 1.7.2? Usually use of two programs 7.1 and 7.2, still installed, with a single profile. But, you are the only one who can tell, if you are the same person

Things were making some sense referring to the previous thread, since Ramona brought it up. If you insist that you were following my directions, well I can't help. Ramona gave you as good direction as she could.

    st857,

If you have only one Profile, and your bookmarks.html file shows 0 KB, then your Bookmarks are gone. The rv. 1.4 indicates that you are using Netscape 7.1, as Westside advised.

This is the user agent string, using Windows 98:
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624 Netscape/7.1

    Windows XP:
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624 Netscape/7.1

    st857,

The automatic backup is you. If you are a heavy user, get lots of Mail and add Bookmarks and Addresses frequently, then back up your Profiles folder daily...
