I have 4 PC's connected via a classic BEFSR-41 Linksys router using simple file sharing and on some computers the connection is either one way or no way. 3 out of the 4 PC's use XP Pro, and my wifes latest came with XP Home. All are up-to-date with the latest post SP-2 updates. My computer can communicate with my wifes XP home, and I can copy, delete, rename any folder on her PC (except of course C:\Windows and C:\Program FIles - and that is a different question for another time) but I can't use her machine to modify files on my PC! It sees it but I can't open my folders to copy them to her machine from her machine. My PC also can't communicate with my daughters XP Pro in either direction also, although when I updated her computer to SP-2 a few months ago, it finally worked for awhile and then stopped again. If I plug my laptop (XP Pro) into the Linksys, 2 way communication is fine, I can see and change files on either machine from the other! My daughters PC can open and modify my wifes PC, and my wife's PC can open and modify my daughters PC.
Since we're simple and trusting, none of the PC's have a password, all have unlimited file sharing turned on (share this folder on the network AND allow network users to change my files), and from what I can tell in the network connections, they are all set exactly the same. Why can my computer see my wifes and not vice versa. Why can my computer work with the laptop and vice versa without a hiccup, but my daughters cannot communicate with me, nor I with it. In each case, all the computer are seen on the network, but when I try to explore the folders in one of the problem directions, I get the error message
"\\computer_1\P3_D-Drive is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Not enough server storage is available to process this command"
Please any ideas? I'm getting tired of burning CD's to move data back and forth as needed.

In order for others on the network to see YOUR files you must have the Server Service started on your computer. Go to Administratvive Tools/Services and set Server service to Auto & start it if it's not started.

    Thanks for the input Tony
Server service was already set to auto and server was started.

    T-Shoot Networking:

    0. Disable all kind of firewalls and antivirus program. Configure the firewall and antivirus programs to NOT start when Windows boots. Disable all auto-protect features for the computer & email. (when everything is working, then you can get reconfigure and restart them). Reboot computer. (if just kill the firewall and av tasks they will still be "holding on to" the original network monitoring settings)

    1. Check hardware conectivity (cables conectivity, cables pluged in to the network card, good network card - not damaged) and check drivers

    2. Check the installed network protocols for the current connection (on every computer). You should have the following 3:
    a. Client for Microsoft Networks
    b. File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks
    c. Internet Protocoll (TCP/IP)
If you have QoS, that's OK, but likely never needed.
If have IPX/SPX remove it, for start. After you have everything going, you can reinstall it if want to..

    3. Check the properties of "Client for MS network ". Should be on Windows locator.

    4. Check the properties of TCP/IP. Should be having internal-type adress (C class), same netmask on every computer, same gateway and same DNS server on each computer (for start).
If you don't have DNS server in you're network, than you should set the DNS server to the same address as the gateway.
If you are on DHCP, than this point is solved for you by the DHCP server.

    5. Check the following 2 services running on each machine: Computer Browser and Server.

    6. Right click MyComputer, choose Manage, and in the Shared Folders -> Shares folder, you check for IPC$. If it is not there, than with a restart should appear. If not then you have some other problems too (for ex: virus)
If you see here C$, D$, ... and other letters with $ sign at the end, that's not a problem.

    7. Now, you should be able to ping every computer from every computer, if not by name, but with IP address, for sure. If not pinging than you should check the above points.

After ping is OK, comes the security part.

    8. Check that all computers are part of the same workgroup.

    9. Check that you have the same kind of file sharing on each computer (simple sharing, or not simple sharing, but it should be the same on each one). You can check this in Windows Explorer's Folder Options, the last one on the View tab.

    10. Disable guest account on each computer.

    11. Create a user with the same name and same password on each computer, and share at least one folder for this user (not just share, but also give access on the security tab)

    12. Restart all computers after this step.

    13. Now you should be able to access all computers from all computers.

    14. If the previous point is still not true, than you can try one more thing: share on each computer a folder for user EVERYONE.

    Windows ME File Share Problem

I have 3 machines connected to a LINKSYS Wireless Router (1 W98, 1XP/SP2 and 1 ME). The W98 and XP2 machines can 'see' all the files I have set up as SHARED. The ME machine can 'see' all the files on the XP and W98 machine. However, from both the W98 and XP machine, I can see the Computer Name in the workgroup, but when I click to see the resources, I get denied, do not have ther resources to view files, etc... So, it appears to be a 1 way street. All file sharing, firewalls, network protocols seemed to be set ok. Since I can see in one direction to two different machines, it apperas the problem would be in the W98 machine. Not sure where at this moment

    What worked for me

I got this input from a Microsoft Support person and it worked for my 4 machines - which happened to be all XP pro and home, but, hey it's worth a try. Go to the MSN KB and try it. BTW, although it was directed toward Norton AV, I have never used NAV, I use AVG and it worked for me

    -------------
    my notes from Feb-05
Default = 15, Had to make it 18 on Athlon2.6 PC and all was well- checked each PC.
    -------------
    From MS Support-

The problem is on the machine you are attempting to connect to. It's not on the machine you see the error message. On the computer you are connecting, check the Event Viewer for an Event ID 2011. If so, you need to fix the IRPStackSize that is indicated in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article. Norton Antivirus can cause this to happen.

Antivirus Software May Cause Event ID 2011

Good Luck - I know how frustrating it can be
