I am having a problem with disabling auto-protect in Norton Anti-virus. I do so prior to playing several computer games, to free up resources for the games. This is per the instructions for the games. I had been doing this for quite some time without problems. I would just right click on the icon on the task bar and click disable auto-protect.
Tonight, however, after doing so, a message started popping up saying that I wasn't protected. It appeared to be from Symantec. I would click OK, but the message continued popping up. As the game would load, the message continued popping up, which caused the game to crash.
I don't know what is causing this to happen all of the sudden?

May be the result of an update from Symantec - have you run LiveUpdate recently? This is different from the autoupdate for virus definitions. I would run LiveUpdate again.

Well, I tried running Live Update again and everything is up to date. Unfortunately, the problem persists.

My Symantec turn off is timed?

I have NAV 2005 and if I disable it it is only for 15 min. unless I override the setting to 1hour 5 hours or until I start again. Is there anyway this update is in there without you knowing it. the 15 min default would interrupt your game about that time frame? Just an idea? But I have seen newer version stuff showing up on older versions with no warning or settings to override them? I just thought of something else Do you have firewall protection My Zonealarm pops up to tell me my virus protection is out of date, but that can be turned off also. loonychoons

I don't see any way in NAV 2003 to adjust settings regarding how long it is disabled. Until just the other day, all I ever had to do was just disable it and it stayed disabled until I re-enabled it or restarted the computer.
I unchecked the anti-virus program monitoring function in my Zone Alarm, but that did nothing. It was a good suggestion, though.
From the looks of the window that pops up, it really appears to be from Symantec/Norton. I'm guessing it might be related to some recent update, since it just started happening. I just wish I knew how to stop it from happening. The game I'm playing, Medal of Honor Pacific Assault, needs the anti virus turned off to conserve system resources.
    Still open to more suggestions.
    Thanks.

If you are using XP SP2, them possibly that 'you are not protected' message is coming from Windows Security Center. To eliminate this message, go to Admin Tools\Services\Symantec WMI Service and STOP the service and then set to manual or Disabled. The warning messages should then disappear.

You won't - that was a 'feature' that appeared in NAV 2005.

TonyT's solution seems to have solved the problem. Now, can I leave it on manual or disabled, or is that something I need to do each time I disable auto-protect to play the game?
    Thanks.

You can keep it either way you want, manual or disabled. Symantec WMI Service is NAV's "tie in" to the Windows Security Center. Either setting (manual or disabled) has no effect on other NAV features, such as auto protect, script blocking, live update etc. This service shares data w/ Windows Security center so that the Security Center becomes the one-stop-shop for security info on the computer.

I don't use any NAV 2003 auto features nor do I use the XP Firewall, so I have Security center set to stopped and manual in Services.
