I have a 98 laptop with OLE 6- It will not export the message files (I get a error initializing MAPI) Can I do a "go around" and copy my .DBX files to my new XP Laptop? I tried and the XP with OLE 6 did not recognize the file?? Is there another way?
OR- Does any one know how to repair the following error...
I try exporting and I get the message that my OLE is not the default program (no matter what I set it at it always turns off the default choice)...then I get the error- THE EXPORT COULD NOT BE PREFORMED- ERROR INITIALIZING MAPI.
I hope someone can help me- Thank you so much! KAL

zoutlook - Welcome to the Board :)
Most certainly - I do this on a regular basis to keep my laptop up to date while I am away and reverse the process when I return home.

The simplest way - avoids delving in the depths of Documents and settings ....

Create a Folder Outlook Express or Emails or whatever you like on the XP laptop.

Copy all the *.dbx files from your 98 laptop and paste them into this new folder.

Then open up OE and go Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder - click on the button - the dialogue box shows the default location of the message store. Hit the change button and browse to the new folder you made.

Alternatively paste the *.dbx files into the default location, overwriting the *.dbx folders already there. If you have messages there that you want to keep make a new folder in OE (right click on Local Folders > New Folder - name it) and drag the messages into it. Then when you have pasted your copied *.dbx files from 98 this folder will not be overwritten and the messages can be dragged into any folder you want.

XP OLE not recognizing the old 98 .DBX files???

    Peter-

Here is what I did and not having any luck-

found the .dbx files in this OL express folder...

    C:\Documents and Settings\Kim\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{ACEE249B-0C16-491C-B19E-348F8295C81C}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

I created a Message folder called OLD FILES
I went to my Outlook Express and The OLD Files folder is there!

I copied over my 98 .DBX files from my cd into the OLD FILES folder-
When I go to my OLE program the OLD Files folder is still empty...
OLE does not recognize my OLE .DBX files I have copied over?
    What I'm I doing wrong?

I don't want to go through the "store folder" each time I need a file
from my old computer and visa versa...

Can you help? Thank you! ZOutlook

    Try this route ....

In OE on the XP laptop create a folder XP Mail (right click on Local Folders > New Folder - name it XP Mail - add sub folders if you wish for Sent, etc)

Drag all your email messages from the existing folders into this new folder, so that all the other folders are empty. The reason for doing this is that in the next step these folders will be overwritten and anything that they contain will be lost.

Copy your 98 *.dbx files from the CD and paste into ....

    C:\Documents and Settings\Kim\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{ACEE249B-0C16-491C-B19E-348F8295C81C}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

allowing dbx files of the same name to overwrite the existing dbx files.

When you next open OE you should see these folders plus the one you created - XP Mail

You can then drag the messages from the XP Mail folder to the appropriate ex 98 folder and when done delete the XP Mail folder.

    or look here ......

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;270670

The problem with importing your 98 *.dbx files from the CD you made is that they may overwrite the files that are already on the XP m/c. I cannot be sure on that.

There's a couple ways you can do this. The first one (if you don't mind having them all end up in one folder in OE) would be to just create a new folder in OE on the 98 computer and then move or copy all of your old messages into it. Just drag and drop the messages from the other folders into it. Don't drag the folders themselves into it. For example, if you want the messages in the inbox moved into the the folder named OLD FILES, drag the messages themselves out of the inbox and into the OLD FILES folder. If you have a lot of them in each folder you can move them all at once by clicking on the first message in the list and then while holding down the shift key, click on the last one in the list. This will highlight them all. Grab one of them and drag it to the new folder you created and all will be moved at once. When you're done close OE and then copy the NEW FILES.dbx that was created in the process to a cd or whatever it is you're using to get the file on the new computer. Don't copy the file to the new computer yet.

Next step is to open OE on the new computer and create a new folder called OLD FILES or whatever you named the other one. Then close OE and in windows explorer go into OE's store folder and find and delete the OLD FILES.dbx file. Then copy the OLD FILES.dbx file from the 98 computer into OE's store folder on the new one. Open OE and your messages should be available.

    Edit:
I removed the last part of this (about keeping the old folder structure) because after thinking about it, it presents a few problems that can be overcome but it just complicates things way to much. Easiest thing to do is either Pete's suggestion or the one of mine above. Basically the same thing, except for how the messages end up being structured in OE. Either way will get the job done.

Hi Zoutlook. I changed your title slightly. You had OLE and it is now OE.

OLE seems logical for Outlook Express but unfortunately the term is already in use for Object Linking and Embedding (a piece of COM/DCOM) so could easily cause confusion for old timers and cause no hits on a search for someone who was looking for OE threads with problems that matched theirs.
