I recently reinstalled Windows XP, and office 2003 but now dont have the "edit with frontpage" button in the explorer toolbar. I look after 2 websites and find this button to be quite valuable when removing spam messages from a site guestbook.
I've adjusted my default htm and html editor to frontpage but the only option i have is to edit with notepad....and that's greyed out so the button is visible but no use whatsoever.
How can i get the edit with frontpage button on my toolbar??
    thanks
    David

Guess you/ve tried View > Toolbars > Customise and add the Edit button? With Office 2003 installed you should have the option to edit in all Office applications + Notepad.

    Assume you have FrontPage installed?

If you get no joy via that route run System File Checker .....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow note the space and have your XP CD handy. This is the first option in a Repair of IE/OE

I tried the cutomize options you thought i might have!
I also have frontpage installed and can use it quite happily with no problem
I tried the sfc /scannow you suggested but I'm not sure what that does. My machine scanned files for a while then when the progress bar reached the top my pc no different. Presumably that means it scanned the files and found no errors?
The edit button as it stands is greyed out giving me no options for editing. the icon looks like the notepad button but it's not available to me.

I'm also unable to download any kind of file - updates, movies, anything. Is it connected to my not having a frontpage button?....it's as though my IE isnt configured to give me access to certain areas or files on the net.

    Any ideas?
    many thanks
    David

I wonder if it is a question of Permissions - are you logged on as Administrator? If not give it a try - really just thinking out aloud here - nothing immediately obvious on Google :( I have edited your thread title to draw others in.

FYI a grab of what I see, as Admin ...

not necessarily - I should have added that SFC runs and exits without any closing dialogue. to see which files, if any, were replaced look in Event Viewer. Should be at least two Events recorded re SFC starting and SFC ending. In between may be Events noting file replacement. If not no files were replaced.

I must have been thinking the same as you...i edited my post above to say something similar to you about the permissions and access!!
I'm the only one to use this pc and have only one account on it...mine. Win xp and I'm the administrator.
I have tweak UI setup to bypass the logon screen but i'll post this and have switched off the autologon to see if maybe Tweak UI is logging me in as something other than administrator.

As for the scannow - i have no idea where the event viewer is or how to use it!

i'll post again when i find out what Tweak UI has been doing

    thanks
    David

It looks like Tweak UI isn't causing any problems - it's logging me in as Administrator.
I got the event viewer - but not sure what I'm looking for. there are lots of files listed which presumably means that lots have been changed. but the dates and times don't seem to match in with the time i ran the scannow - i only did that once but there are several dates in the file list.

Many Events are recorded in Event Viewer, most are informatory, some are Warnings (flagged yellow) and a few are Errors (flagged Red). Double click on an Event to open it. I wouldn't worry if files were replaced or not - the problem remains!

I've nothing more to add at the moment ....

I got a friend to email me Mozilla and used that for a while. When i tried to use IE again it seemed to work ok. No idea what changed - I didn't deliberately make any changes but i can now use IE and download updates etc no problem.
My "edit with" button now shows Excel, frontpage, word and notepad as it should!
    thanks for everyone's help!!
    David

Thanks for the update - no idea why it's working now - unless of course Mozilla scared the pants off IE and bucked it up:D
